Default GT-3 RS - Clone

Larry - thanks for spilling the beans!!!

Supercup is right - based on his recommendation, I purchased an immaculate 2002 GT-3 Cup Car with a list of modifications that make the RS Clone modifications look like bolting on fancier pedals.

Grussell - Getty Design has CF doors for around $1,500 each. Debating on going that route as opposed to changing to RS door panels (4 pound saving per door). Guessing the weight savings must be at least 25 per door with CF? I also need to do the rear bumper (sans bumper guards). Car had a DAS roll bar and RS wing went purchased.

Jon70 - Congrats on DC Lee's car - I actually tried buying it before embarking on this project. What have you done to the car since purchasing?

Mr. Buck - you are right, not a true RS - I have a glove box (RS's don't according to Vegasgolf). Once one realizes how much it costs to import a real RS (and associated problems and potential time delays), the conversion actually makes sense (well, sort of).

Kent Moore (Premier Sportscar Service - Las Vegas) deserves all the credit; all of those years wrenching on the Lemans winning Peterson White Lightning GT3 RSR paid off as to set-up, knowledge, expertise, etc.

You're welcome!

Hey, you did exactly what I would have wanted to do to it if I could have.

Carbon fibre doors require a cage with side impact protection. Seems like a step too far for a road car!

The RHD RSs all had glove boxes so you aren't that unauthentic. They are in fact lighter due to the smaller fuel tank. (although personally I'd rather have the larger tank)

Default GT-3 Authenticity

Dan,

Thanks for the info! Kent and I tried to go item by item as to differences between the GT-3 and Euro GT-3 RS and replicate as closely as possible or in some cases, improve upon the existing RS. (More importantly, Vegasgolf was insistent that real RS's had no glove box )

Problem is that RS's are extremely scarce in the US (to my knowledge) and unless an informed person has seen and been around a real one in Europe (I haven't, but Kent has at the factory), one has to rely on pictures, articles and informal networks (forums, observations from folks across the pond, etc.) It also appears that many of them had varying degrees of customer ordered options so that there is no clear "standard" GT-3 RS (i.e. subtleties such as white roll bar vs. black one). Further, it seems as though some of the mechanical differences were very subtle improvements that Porsche Motorsports made for racing purposes (to homologate the GT-3 RSR).

I would also agree that the CF doors is overkill at this point.

Any other RS comments/changes/differences based on direct observation and knowledge is greatly appreciated!

Best,

Fred

Beautifully done!

You can always do what Porsche did and swap with a '99-'01 owner for his glovebox-less lower dash. If you want to even more authentic, you could get rid of the bumperettes and fill the holes for a Euro-look.

Yeah those bumper warts need to go. Why do you need them in the US?

White cage was an option (looks better imho). Your belts should match the colour of the graphics too - dunno if you've done that?

Not to mention the different ECU map to take advantage of the LWF with more agressive fueling, and modified head for better airflow.

Default GT-3 RS Clone

Khalid, Dan and Jason - Thanks!!!

Rear bumper is going - U.S. bumper requirements certainly aren't designed for aesthetics.

Fred - you are my hero buddy. Well done man!

Now, let speak man to man about that Cup car. We need you, we want you in the POC.

Aren't you ready to move back from the hinderland to the real fake world (LA) and race that baby. Come on, we need more 996 Cups in our races - let show those 997 guys that we can have fun amoung ourselves!

Okay, the more pictures that I see, the more I'm thinking that this car more than deserves the right to wear those RS badges!

I have been known to do some crazy conversions and this one is right up at the top...keep it up!
