I looked at my hard copy 997 GT3 brochure and now the front cover makes sense.
"Origin: sunroof"
not
"Origin: motorsport"
Vote with your purchasing power, this is not the essence of a GT3 model !

I do not know if it was official - one thing that caught my eye was that the initial ring times were run on R compounds - I thought those would be OEM equipment on the 997GT3?
However, if you are buyin a GT3 - I would only go for the RS since you can get it in NA - the GT3 will just be the street car.

None of those are race cars (or "race car with the licence plate" type of cars without carpeting, noisy, crappy interior etc. i.e. 964 3.8 RS, 911 RSR could be pretty good examples of cars that have pretty much nothing else than what race cars have) and RS ain't that much different from the "regular" GT3.

Just how much exactly does a sunroof weigh in addition to a normal roof? maybe 10 pounds worth of motors and rails and an extra beam for re-enforecemnt?

Typically a sunroof will add at most net 40lbs. Based on R&R on race cars, typical numbers come in in the 20's.

i'll bet we'reprobably closer to the 20 on the 996's. its not a very hightech roof at any rate...not like a panoramic one on a benz or anyhitng

^ hmm..so its still an important weight savings.
as mentioned earlier in the thread, replacing the roof with a non-sunroof panel would yeild the desired weight savings but may or may not help with structural regidity. But if you were to add the rear cage half which would most likely not be sold in the US, wouldn't that add the additiona stiffness to compensate for the hole?

Hmm..I dont think I'd taken the air chisel to my new GT3 just to say "I dont got no stinkin' sunroof". Better use that effort to learn how to drive the thing.
And yep, the there will be a pretty big performance diff between the gT3 and GT3RS - and in relative terms, they are marketing the the GT3 as the softer "street car". However, if the DMV will give you a plate, your cup car can be made street so really just an issue of your own definition.
Face it, PAG is given us a GT3 for the standard, (what is price 108?) and the 120K car with the same stuff you'd buy anyways at premium. The RS is likely to be far cheaper for those that will be making OEM upgrades (which we always do).
