Default Exporting a Mk1 GT3 to the US/Canada?

As per the title, if I ever moved west in the future (my fam lives in Canada already), I would hate to have to sell up my Mk1. I know the Mk1 was never approved for the US markets as a new car, but can they be exported over there as a used car? What would they need to pass?

Hi,

I understand this is pretty much impossible to do (for road use...)... Actually it is near impossible to reimport back a car which you have taken out of the US to Europe (even if you put it back exactly as it was when it initially left the US).

There was a GT3 MK1 at the Glen this past week. Looked to be setup for C class, though it did have plates on it.

Try contacting Steve Patti (www.euro-rs.com). He has experience federalising other non US cars (964 RS, 993 RS, etc.)

HERE is the list of part changes required for importing a mk1 GT3 into the USA. If going into Canada I don't think you will need to change out the instrument cluster?

I believe is possible to bring a car here for 1 up to one year without any modifications/etc.

Jason - thanks for this info. Perhaps a silly question, but why is the fuel tank and lines required to be changed? The euro Mk1 is set up for SUL 98RON (Euro method of measurement)... is there an additive in US fuel that makes it incompatible with Euro parts?

I'm sorry, the parts list that I posted was for importing the MK2 and not the MK1. The MK1 petition (for the USA) was denied. And I don't think that the JB Motorsports imported mk1 GT3 can be street titled if brought into the country under a race exemption?

The main differences are related to rollover and evaporative emission requirements. The other issue is that a manufacturer certifies a vehicle with a certain size fuel tank so if you are hoping to bring in a car that is "substantially similar" you need to have the same size tank.

I believe that in the case of the original poster, he must contact Transport Canada to find out eligibility for importation over here......it is correct that the car can be brought in for a 12 month period on a visitor's permit.

Does re-exporting to the US for a long weekend and re-importing back to Canada reset the 12month period?

Jason - thanks for the detailed info. Much appreciated!

It sounds like I may have to wait until 2015... or if the Great West calls sooner, then there are a lot of options!

When importing as a non-resident the car can be in the US up to 12 months or until the visit of the non-resident ends.

I have been looking into temporarily bringing my 951 over to the US for some racing and have found info here:
