Bob advised me to use that oil also when I installed the LWFW I got from him (great service, BTW). I decided to put up with the gear whine instead and use what Porsche recommended. Warranty and copper corrosion inhibitors changed my mind. If I ever put in a cup car LSD I will reconsider.

Chris, just to clarify...

are you saying that Bob implied the chatter and squeaks drop off when using Mobil 1?

The data sheets in a recent post show that copper sorrosion inhibitors are in Mobil 1 as well as PTX and I think SHC. The relativity of each to the others?... who knows.

More investigation warranted....

Yes, he said it would quiet the gearbox rattling at idle. (I rather like the gearbox rattle, actually.)

Default PTX only

Mobilube PTX (000 043 320 420) is the only transaxle gear oil approved by Porsche for any year 996, 997 GT3, RS, GT2, and turbo's at this time. Shell (000 043 320 419) is not approved for G96 series transaxles. Joel Reiser will ask Brian Copens regarding aftermarket alternatives when he see him at Sebring. PTX is only sold through Porsche stateside in 20 liter containers at $500.00+. It is available elsewhere in Europe, but it is hard to find. Some/many dealers in the US are reluctant to order it for a one-time service of 3.3 liters. You may be able to buy less than 20 liters from a dealer in person. I do not know yet if a dealer will ship..., since it is considered a haz/mat product. Most of the PTX is at dealers in the west. There is none in Michigan. Will post later.

Another vote for SHC/Delvac.

It works with street or race LSDs. The lack of additives may allow the LSD to make a little noise, but the performance should be unaffected.

Cup Cars use brass synchros in reverse and first gear so Porsche must not believe that that is an issue.

The LS oil seems to cause the synchros to function poorly when the oil is very hot.

Chris,
Lufteknic recommends SHC/Delvac. However, it is not recomended by Mobil as a GL4/GL5 gear oil which is what G96.96 calls for. Mobil said to use LS 75W 90 which is GL4 OK.
There must be a warranty safe gear oil out there, as with engine oils, as an alternative to Porsche's PTX. I'am not, at this point in time, willing to be a test mule for the aftermaket. I do not track my GT3. (If I did, I would buy a Cup car.) I own it, and plan to keep it long term. The aftermarket gear oils maybe great if you routinely change it for DE/race events. But street GT3's "may" need PTX or something else. Service on G96.96 transaxles is 90K miles. Perhaps after Sebring, Joel will have a definitive answer from Brian.

Dealers will not ship PTX due to haz/mat. Prehaps you can buy less than 20 liters from a dealer in person?

I posted the very answer to this question in the thread I started about gear oil a week or two ago. Long story short.....my dealer will sell me from the 20L drum if I bring my own container. He said he will just charge 1/20 of the cost of the drum per L sold. Something like $5.20/L.

Dell,
I'am happy for you in Carolina. There is "0" PTX in all of Michigan. The nearest is Indiana, at Tom Wood Porsche, an 8 hour drive.
I did get a reply from Redline Oil. They recomended their 75W 90NS as a replacement for PTX.

Sorry to hear about that Jack. Time to get your dealers to pony up and get some GT3 gear oil. I assume they don't do enough gear oil changes to a GT3 to warrant stocking it.

Most, if not all area dealers have not serviced any GT3's, let alone R/R RMS or installed the RS flywheel. I talked to one service person at a well known Porsche dealer who did not even know what a GT3 was! This would not be an issue if I still lived in LA or Manhattan. I'll find a way through this short of leaving Michigan.

Damn I feel for ya Jack! Just really highlights just how rare these cars are. So my question to you (or more specifically your dealer) is what are you supposed to do when your car is due for service, more specifically gear oil service???

I was told by Porsche to talk to the dealer service manager about using the proper gear oil. He will then talk to the regional rep.... In short, my Porsche experience has been over the decades, when you buy such a car be prepared to do most of the lifting yourself regarding servicing. You can understand now, why there are so many independents/turner shops serving our interests. Communication with the customer is still not what it should be with any of the German marks. I'll do the gear service after the RMS and the intermediate shaft seal (do both while your there) are done under warranty.

Hi;

I'm bumping this thread because I made the leap and bought a 20 liter container of the proper lubricant, Mobilube PTX 75 W 90. See my new post.
