Default Short shift kit problems?

My Mk1 GT3 came with a short shift kit fitted. Gear changing is not very good. Is there any adjustment with the kit - or is it just a trait of the SSK?

I am not sure (yet) which SSK it is.

If you truly are having trouble accessing certain gears, then it may be an adjustment problem with respect to the cable connections.

The GT3 stock box is perfectly fine IMO. On the regular 996, however, I find the SSK to be quite an improvement.

Cheers

Is the cable mechanism adjusment pretty much DIY? Or a job for a tech?

Let's assume that you have the in car SSK involving the actual gearshift lever (not the under car mount version). You may need to adjust the two threaded cable connectors under the shifter.

Are you having trouble accessing certain gears? For example, it's always hard to access 3rd?

It's a DIY, but parts of the job can be a little PITA.

Do a search. There's plenty of stuff on SSKs...

John,
IMO I would have a tech or someone with experience do it. Don't ask me about my experience with a shifter on a hemi charger. I made a one speed out of it.

PS
What is my car doing in your avitar ?

RJ

Done a search - still more to do!

I will look into cheking hte adjustment, as 3rd is a bit of a PITA to engage, as is 2nd. It feels to me that the action isjust not quite long enough to get the gear selected. I'll let you know how I get on.

John, whilst I know you already asked about this on pistonheads, its not something you should manually adjust without the SSK. There is a special Porsche tool that fits over allowing precise adjustment of the linkage.

No idea how you do it with a SSK on, but it seems you've found similar opinions of the SSK here as you did on the UK sites

The other issue with the mk1 GT3 is that the synchros are a bit weak. There is an upgrade kit available, and the mk2 was upgraded by Porsche.

I have a mechanically inclined friend who can do this install in his sleep.

Yes, the OEM SSK has a centering tool. Yes, the cable adustment can be tricky. Yes, people do aftermarket SSK installs such as the B&M without any centering tool.

If you don't have access to a friend who has either done the install or knows the shifting mechanism well, then you're probably better off paying a tech to "do it right" and save yourself the headache.

Your problem may not even be related to the SSK which DanH has already alluded to...

Cheers

OK I dont know about the centerin tool. I had one done by my self on my old boxter and I have one at these time on my 05 MKII GT3 and I have no problems at all. If any thing the only problems that I have is just when the transmission is cold. Other than that is short crisp and with a little effort. Then Again I like it that way.
Try talking to you dealer there are some transmisionn links can be adjusted. Last week I had them make it harder to put the gear stick in revers position. ( During DE's I tend to pull to hard to drop the car into 2nd and find my self pulling to far to the right) They adjust something don't ask me what. Is harder know and no more going to fare to drop into 2nd

I'm always amazed about people liking the SSK. Haven driven sticks for many, many years I tried the SSK, expecting great things, in my 996. I immediately took it out and gave it away. It was properly installed but caused too much notchiness between 1st and 2nd. Try the "heartbeat" (search archives) instead, you'll be happier.

I believe that Colm is referring to a rhythmic approach to shifting... involving more patience and "feel"... thus, the term "heartbeat".
