Outside Temp Sensor Failure
Here's a weird one. I am driving along on a warm day and all of a sudden I get a "Outside Temperature Sensor Failure" in red in the display. The my air temp guage goes to 60 (Celcius, 140 F).
It stayed that way for a while and then went back to normal.
My wife's GT3 did the exact same thing two weeks later.
The only common link between the two cars is that both of us had a new ECU software load - the high altitude recall.
Could the new firmware for the ECU have caused this? In my wife's case, the Air Conditioning also shut down until the sensor returned to normal. It was also a warm day when she had the problem.
The dealer said "huh" when he was told the story.
Rgds,

I checked and the sensor is still in the plastic holder on both cars. Note, both cars have the cup car grills to protect the rads but I doubt that could be a cause since they have been on for a year. Only change was the software. Very weird.

My temp sensor needed to be moved with the install of the cup car mesh.
I don't know why, but thats what the shop foreman said. He drilled a little hole and it now sits right in front of the radiator.

Hi Bob,
It seems to me that with most "electronic" problems the dealers response is "Huh" at least at Prestige. I got the same accurate response with my own CEL problem. I'm still waiting for Irwin to get me the parts to properly replace the Jerry rigged ones I installed to fix the problem that they couldn't.
"Huh"
Did the CEL come on or was it just the OTS failure message.
On the whole I think the dealers suck big time what reputable franchised dealer wouldn't have A/C relays for Boxsters in stock during the summertime here in Montreal. Maybe their stock budget was exhausted on winter tires and wheels for Cayennes, just in case anyone was going to Frobisher Bay in July.

Hey Frozen North,
I am moving my car to Park City, 6500'+ this fall, and tracking at the new LHM in SLC, at 4500'+... High Alt Recall? Will my car rule (2004 GT3), or crap out? GT3Bob
PS.. Independant of the driver :-)

Ron, No CEL just a "outside air temperature sensor failure". Also wonder about exactly what parts the dealers stock.. nothing I ever need for sure.
GT3Bob - there is a recall campaign for new software. Without it at high altitudes the engine loses power (lots). The recall has been going on for almost a year and the local dealer finally got it - mind you we are not high altitude around here ...; The problem first surfaced in Europe the Stelvio pass comes to mind. Ask your dealer about it.
