Default Engine Oil Leak

I have, what I believe, is Mobil 1 dead center on the German case after the sway bar. I did a proper breakin, and have 3000 street miles on my 18 July 2003 build . I hope the reports of backward seals is what may be the cause.
I hear, Kern, at Fred Lavery Porsche (MI.) is who I should talk to. Does anyone offer another name or dealer? Also, should I flatbed the car for the 2+ hours drive south of me, or can I drive it to the dealer? I'll report what happens.
Regards, Jack

As long as it's not dripping badly(I mean pouring out) you don't need to flatbed it. Hope it's a small fix. Regards. Mike

Are you sure the leak is not coming from the oil drain plug ? An improperly seated drain plug sealing ring or incorrect plug torque could also be the culprit. Good luck. I have not heard of any leaks on the 964 case for GT3's

The oil canister seal also needs to be looked at. You might have the new Spanish case depending on your production date. You might want to spend some time trying to find the leak yourself.

It's not the case drain plug. The oil leak is coming down from where the engine case and trans meet, just past the sway bar.

JM - one of my pals had a leak from the same location. Turned out the Rear Main Seal (RMS) had been installed backwards. Funny thing is that the tech was careful to install the new RMS with the same orientation as the one he removed. Oops a second trip to get it turned around the right way. No issues ever since.

The oil tank sits above the rear of the engine and the oil/heat exchanger is also on top. There are quite a few places for the leak to start.

Based on his build date, mine is 7/8/03, it would appear he has the 964 case...

Sounds like a RMS leak. Mine was replaced, seems good as new now...or I should say better than new.

Bob, According to a senior tech, Kern, at Lavery Porsche, it is not possible to install the seal backwards. From what I'am, hearing, it could be a RMS. However, if it's only a few drops after sitting in a cold garage for 4 months and you have good oil pressure, it's ok to dive. Just keep an eye on your oil level. It also should not contaminate the clutch.
Kevin, As you suggested, it could be a hose, O ring, etc.
Holger B., Was the new RMS an undated seal, or same?
Nonetheless, I'll have it inspected, and will report to the form. Thanks all for your input

I believe they have tried a few materials in making the rear seals. I have seen some white, green and tan. I'm assuming different materials.

Spoke to Joel Reiser, PCA Tech, and he said there have been a few RMS failures on German 964 cases , but very early in life, with little or no owner miles on the car. Porsche "swapped out at no charge". I cleaned the underside and saw nothing wrong. If it is a RMS, it's very slow or small at this time. I'll wait and have a dealer inspection soon.
