Question Techquipment bar: For show or go??

With all the controversy, I want to get this question out into the open. Is this a piece of jewlery or does this work as more then just a place to pit your belts.

Let's put it this way...I doubt Porsche would distribute/mfg a roll bar that would be a danger to the occupant in a roll over(wearing a helmet of course)...Obviously welded/bolted to the floor is best and if It was a race car only, that would be the way to go. The DasSport bolts in and I believe the rear legs affix to the shock towers unlike the bolted in TE variety...just my opinion...

This bar is not legal for any race sanctioning body, so that should tell you something. The big issue is that the way it is mounted, you have 4 bolts that take the full force of a rollover. Chances are that one or more of these will snap in a heavy impact. The DAS Sport bar bolts to the rear shock towers and can optionally have the front legs bolted to a plate welded under the floor pan. Installed in this manner, it is legal in PCA for stock class racing.

The tubes are also flattened at bolt points. What is the weakest area of a flattened metal tube? That should say enough

What about the RS or clubsport cage compared to the DAS or safety devices?

The clubsport cars can have fullcage (front and rear) or rearcage only. What are the differences between these cages, besides that one is only mounted in the rear. Is that a tequipment bar in the clubsport cars?

club sport cage/rear bar is slightly bigger dia. then tequipment bar.
also, mounting pt is diffrent. tequipment is attached to the seat belt anchors.
club sport rear bar is attached to rear shock tower and the front legs are bolted to a plate that you weld onto the tub.

i would say in a rollover i would much rather have it than not have it, but if i were doing any sort of racing i wouldn't even consider it.

Do we have any evidence of one failing as yet?

I have not heard of any failing, but I have not heard of any being tested in a roll either. All the talk I have heard about it failing is based on the bolt in design and the fact that its not legal for SCCA or PCA competition.

Where can I find the requirements for rollbars and other equipment for PCA and SCCA, in particular what events require what equipment?

Let's put it this way...If you go off the road into an embankment and roll over, I would rather have the TE rollbar than not. I also use stronger bolts than the stock ones...7/16 grade 8 but with a bolt head that is twice as thick. Less shear potential than stock. The bolt head is probably the weakest link...

Anyone experience this weird phenomenon, sometimes when a stone is kicked up towards the rear wheel area the sound is transmitted thru the Tequipment Bar? [Ping]
