As has been said, the closest equivalent to the cup set up is rebuilding a stock 996 shifter with the Function-First Shift Right solution, and numeric racing shifter cables.

If your car is a 997TT then the conversation here is moot. The 997TT gearbox has 30% longer throws than a GT2/3/Cup gearbox.

You want to install this to a standard 996 Carrera shifter. Buy the "SRS retrofit kit only" for $325. Forget the "slightly shorter shifter options".

https://www.function-first.com/produ...right-solution

This will essentially give you a "996Cup" shifter

I have about 80 track days in the last 2.5 years on my numeric shifter and cables. I dont find the middle setting to be too short or a problem and I dont feel the nvh is higher. I use numerics silicone wrap and have the cables issolated so maybe thats the key? I also have the rs lwfw which helps with a fast shift.

If i had to do it again i would use the cai for the track but its too much for a street car. The fit just isnt right but the function is perfect.

I have the 7.2GT3 shifter in my GT3. I feel it's a bit too short. I prefer the longer throw 996 shifter. Most people falsely equate a shorter shifter with faster and more precise shifting. The clutch set up is what determines how fast you can shift the gearbox. A short shifter is typically more notchy with a less defined H pattern. Just my $0.02

Also, asking people that have a 996TT or 997TT about their opinion does not necessarily translate how a shifter will feel and / or function on a. 996GT2 or GT3 as the gear shift levers are shorter on the GT gearboxes by about 25-30% compared to those on the TT gearboxes. This results in different shift feel and throw when using the same shifter. Most do not take this into account.

I dont have an experience with other shifters and i would check directly with numeric to see if their cables work with a particular shifter.

As PH has said its mostly the clutch for speed and its the shifter for feel. The numeric is deff knotchy but im fine with it. I dont mind working a little to make the shift and the engaugement is very positive.

But metal cables are very important...without them all is pointless

I don't necessarily agree on that. I use Cup cables on my race car. They are great for that application. I would not use them on a street car. Pointless in my opinion unless you don't care about the noise. I use stock GT3 cables on my street 7.2GT3 with zero complaints.

I think many falsely equate race parts with automatically being better for street cars. That is not always the case.

The most sensible post on Rennlist for many a year.

The obsession with having the shortest throw shifter is at best misguided, and at worst reckless.
I totally get the desire for a precision shift assembly that removes all the slop/play from the stock plastic components, but reductions in throw on any 997or 996 GT car are pointless (unless accelerating the wear on your synchros is a priority) in which case it would be quicker and less inconvenient (and probably ultimately cheaper) to just pay large sums of money directly Ito your chosen transmission overhaul shop’s account …

I don't agree with you, OEM gear shift cables have moving elements, so changing gears is not pleasant for me. I will not install the Numeric gear lever because I think it is unnecessary. However, I will install a gear lever like in the GT3 and metal cables. I'm currently on vacation, when I come back I'll take a closer look at the OEM cables, maybe I'll be able to modify them to those in the 996 cup.
