Sure Marv, Push him off the slippery slope

All true, and has been done by many, including myself, but all not cheap, esp with the rise in cost of Porsche parts in the last 2-3 years!

Slope? You mean cliff, right?

Yea, Slope, cliff, abyss, black hole, whatever

And prices did get really stupid - I watched the price of a crank go from $1900 to $4000 in ~ 6 months...

So, if one wanted to rebuild an engine to OEM, what would your guestimate be for the parts alone?

Post #2 here: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-gt2-...er-engine.html

I redid it again 2 years later, and spent another $10K. no labor costs in any of this since my time is free

The other question is how much needs to be replaced - I replaced everything that even looked a little bit worn as I didn't want to ever do it again!

So, you rebuilt your own engine. Impressive! How much in special Porsche tools did you need?

I did. WRT tools: I made some, borrowed some, and bought some. All in all, figure ~$3-$4K in necessary tools. Used for:
  • Setting cam timing
  • Tightening cam bolts
  • Installing pistons
  • Installing RMS
You also need some good measuring tools: A good torque wrench or 3 is essential - 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 - the 1/2 needs to support angles. The only non-Porsche parts I used in the motor were the con-rod bolts - ARP, and the wrist-pins - custom DLC pins.

Most of these adventures are documented under my 'handle' rbahr.

I also have done my transmission and the suspension.
