Default Video of lap at Thunderhill

I haven't seen many local GT3 lap videos, so I though I'd post one from last weekend's PCA event at Thunderhill. The car is stock except for R-compounds, race pads, and a track alignment. Lap time is about 2:05.5.

Mike,
Great video!!!! You rascal, you're getting a lot of track time!!
Where was everyone else on the track? Looks like you had the whole track to yourself. Very smooth driving, and nice line. Never been to Thunderhill, but everyone who has been there says it's terrific.
I have had my FE mounted on my roll bar and recently realized that that foreclosed the possibilitly of a video mount. So I ordered and just received today a new FE bracket for the passenger seat and the video mount for the roll bar. I'll try to take some video at the Tribute to LeMans at Fontana. Can one's voice be picked up by the camera? A little real time narration would be fun (e.g., "I'm going 165 mph now as we head into turn #1 and downshift into 3rd").
Anyway, good show!!
John

Yeah, thanks Mike. Having just viewed your experience; how about some feedback on the car. Was it what you expected? What about the handling? The power? Etc. BYW, what was plugged into your cig lighter?

Thanks
Philip

John, the camera has two external microphones, both are mounted behind the rear carpet against the firewall to avoid wind noise and better pick up engine sound. One could be mounted on my helmut, but I've found that talking is a distraction and I loose concentration.

MetalSolid, on some laps the car was a little stubborn rotating if for example I carried too much speed into a corner, particularly in turn 2 the 180 sweeper, but on this particular lap the car was pretty well balanced. I've been working on learning what the car likes and dislikes and adjusting my driving accordingly.

Philip, the plug is for camera power.

Bumps and kurbs don't seem to upset the car, the tires seem to stay on the road most of the time and grip is excellent. The suspension seems to be working well.

The gearing is a little tall, notice I'm in 2nd gear from the entry of turn 3 all the way to the exit of 6.

Handling and balance are good, I don't know where I could complain. In turn 2 on this lap I had a little trouble just prior to the apex correcting the slide, but I was not relaxed enough and was not looking far enough ahead, and as a result I was late on the corrections. It was my error not the car's. In right hand turn 5b after the first hill I was a little more relaxed and was looking further ahead. My correction was a little better, but still not quite good enough. In turn 8 and particularly turn 9 over the second hill there is more speed to be had, but this is me being conservative rather than any problem with the car.

The car is awesome and very fast for a street car. One instructor told me that my car makes race cars look slow.

Any chance you'll be at Laguna Seca on 5/15 with Trackmasters? I'll be there in a 360, first track event, will run pure stock.

Indeed!! A 2:05 lap time is really respectable. Anytime you're getting down near 2 minute laps, you're hauling at Thunderhill.

For comparison check out the 2000 PCA Club race at Thunderhill. (It looks from the PCA archive that it was the last time they had a PCA Club race at Thunderhill.)

http://www.pca.org/pca/clubrace/2000_results/000709_thunderhill/dc.htm

Also, it's fun to see in the video the 1:29 mark where the rubber goes off to the left at turn 8. That's the spot where if you go off, all the underneath parts of your car get damaged.

We have plenty of Porsche racing at Thunderhill, just not PCA club racing. Too much overhead. Anyway, check out here for more recent results: http://www.porscheracingclub.com/php...list.php?id=29

As a comparison I got down into the 2:03's in a stock RS America that was only shocks/springs/brake pads/Hoosiers from factory delivery.

Mike will be flirting with 2:00 flat once he can hustle that GT3 around like the S2000!

Wow Ken that is a great time! I had been figuring I was around 4 sec off a really good time but I guess it is more than that. Don't go any faster. The bar is high enough as it is.
