Default Whats accurate oil gauge or dipstick??

I just changed my oil and after adding 9.6 qts the gauge shows full but the dipstick is just a little over the middle mark. Whats the deal, I noticed this before. The car used about 1/2 qt in 3400mi. I also cut open the oil filter and there were lots of little chunks of metal mainly alum. But that's what the filter is for. I remember years ago with my 87 911 they made you change the oil @ 1000mi. Same thing on the F355 I had. Either it doesn't make a difference or they do it to enhance sales saying no maintainance for 15000mi ..

Changed my oil at 6000 miles, cut the filter open and it was clean enough to eat off. It was recently pointed out to me that the 15k mile oil change interval has more to do with EPA requirements than engine maintenance.

EPA has nothing to do with it. It's all about marketing. The longer the intervals, the more you can claim low maintenance cars. OTOH, I think it is safe to change synthetic oil at 15k intervals, unless one is using the car under severe conditions.

Use the dipstick after proper warmup, it's more accurate. After draining the case and tank for about an hour, I used 10 Qts. to get near the top mark. Also, I changed the oil after 1200 miles and found nothing on or in the filter

Even during the breakin?

This reminds me, do you guys know the breakin requirements are stated as 1,000 miles for NA yet in Germany it's 1,000Km. Any ideas?

The oil is already changed once at the factory before you get the car after the factory running of the engine. That is probably one of the reasons people are not finding anything in their filter after they do an initial change, fyi

Where is the dip stick? I wasn't aware that the 996 had one.

CodeRed: Open the oil filler cap and if you've got one it'll be inside there. I thought I'd read the 996 Turbo didn't have a dip stick and I imagine that would also apply to the GT2 if true.

I guess I have to be the odd man out. I use the oil level gauge and ignore the dipstick. Break in for Canadian cars is 1600 kilometers or, 1000 miles.

Richard: Turbos/GT2s don't get a dip stick from the factory-- so have no worries when you open the oil filler cap and can't find it.

Jack-Thats what I thought. I'm glad I didn't spend a lot of time looking for it.

Why don't Turbos get the dip-stick? Could it be because they're not accurate with the dry-sump system?

The dry sump system is the same with the Turbo, GT2 and GT3.

And Porsche has been building dry-sump motors (with dipsticks) for quite a while now. It is strange that the GT2/Turbo don't have a dipstick at all though. Maybe they ran out of room with all the turbo plumbing, etc..?
