I just changed my oil and after adding 9.6 qts the gauge shows full but the dipstick is just a little over the middle mark. Whats the deal, I noticed this before. The car used about 1/2 qt in 3400mi. I also cut open the oil filter and there were lots of little chunks of metal mainly alum. But that's what the filter is for. I remember years ago with my 87 911 they made you change the oil @ 1000mi. Same thing on the F355 I had. Either it doesn't make a difference or they do it to enhance sales saying no maintainance for 15000mi ..

Changed my oil at 6000 miles, cut the filter open and it was clean enough to eat off. It was recently pointed out to me that the 15k mile oil change interval has more to do with EPA requirements than engine maintenance.

Use the dipstick after proper warmup, it's more accurate. After draining the case and tank for about an hour, I used 10 Qts. to get near the top mark. Also, I changed the oil after 1200 miles and found nothing on or in the filter

OTOH, I think it is safe to change synthetic oil at 15k intervals, unless one is using the car under severe conditions.

This reminds me, do you guys know the breakin requirements are stated as 1,000 miles for NA yet in Germany it's 1,000Km. Any ideas?

CodeRed: Open the oil filler cap and if you've got one it'll be inside there. I thought I'd read the 996 Turbo didn't have a dip stick and I imagine that would also apply to the GT2 if true.

Still plays with cars.

I guess I have to be the odd man out. I use the oil level gauge and ignore the dipstick. Break in for Canadian cars is 1600 kilometers or, 1000 miles.

And Porsche has been building dry-sump motors (with dipsticks) for quite a while now. It is strange that the GT2/Turbo don't have a dipstick at all though. Maybe they ran out of room with all the turbo plumbing, etc..?
