Talking Wow, now that's a thread!!

Some great quotes in there though.........

"It is not always possible to be the best, but it is always possible
to improve your own performance". - Jackie Stewart, Formula One World
Champion

DE is to racing as solo flying is to aerial combat.

Sometimes, when I get down on myself and down on life in general I feel like a real loser. Then I read a post like this and I feel pretty good about myself.

It wasn't Jacques...it was his idiot brother-in-law Phillípe LeTanque, who messed up a fuel stop and flooded the carbs. Ah, the French...a nation of waiters...

I notice with interest JimBoob that you hide your identity, and don't allow emails, or PM's. Why the cowardly cowering, it it just the shame of being a linguistically challenged idiot? You must be one of the clan Colm has warned us about. Since you can read, my friendly fool, reread the first line of the thread once again, to see the spirit in which it was started.

Correct Alignment really does make a huge difference.

Thanks so much to BobR, mds and Todd for all the great info on getting my car set up correctly.
Another shining example of the power of the board to share information, and improve the ownership experience.

JimBob is a regular on the 993 board, he means no harm. We have grown to accept him the way he is. He does cheer us up when the discussion get 'heated' (which is often lately)

How in the world did you only get the tire temps up to a little over 100 degrees? Was it below freezing out there?

Greg: I had the same thought, but didn't want to express it earlier given everyone's apparent sensitivity. I'm not sure what the PS2's optimal tire temp range is, but I'm certain they work/stick better with more heat. FWIW, I do know that the sweet spot of the Pilot Sport Cup's tread compound is in the range of 160-220 degrees F, according to Michelin.

40º ambient am, 47º pm, with the usual strong midday winds at Willow.

The temps were taken after the cool down lap, as soon as I got the car back to my parking spot with a Longacre Infra Red device. I did notice that by the time I'd done all 4 wheels, and went back to the first one to recheck it the temp had fallen off a good few degrees. Someone at the track did mention that I should have got a device with a probe, because it is less sensitive to surfacetemp changes. I also noticed the tire pressures rose much less that they did before the alignment, but I thought that was this down to the correct alingment producing less friction build up.

Since I've never had one of these devices before I have no idea what temps should be, I was just happy that they seemed relatively even.

What is the ideal for MPSC @ Willow on a chilly day?

have no fear, no sensitvity here from any new information, that is how we all learn. Using the board to throw insults without offering anything useful seems like a waste of time and space to me, especially as this thread started to thank those who helped me get the car running better. Thanks for the info on the MPSC OT, great to know.

Well that is a problem, get a probe type pyrometer and only use the Infra Red to check brake temps or engine temps or track temps even. It is worthless for tire temps. You need to get a second person to check your tire temps immediately after a normal, hot lap. Not a cool down lap

I think you are being a bit thin-skinned. Viken was trying to help you and suggested that maybe you need a different type of instruction to get the most out of your GT3. It is no different than my comment about you buying the wrong pyro – that wasn’t an insult either – only a comment on how your money was spent. Just because you thought it was an insult, doesn't mean it was....

get a probe type pyrometer
Do you have a suggestion for what would be a good device for this?
(I notice Longacre also make one)
I'll try to find a suitable volunteer

Just because you thought it was an insult, doesn't mean it was....
I had one pm, and three emails from other folks who took it the same way I did; anyway enough of that, and on to more important things.......like getting the both car and driver optimized.

I'll agree with Greg, the probe-type pyrometer is the only way to go, and to do it correctly, you'll need someone to help you. Go out and run at least 5 hard fast laps, and pull into the hot pits, where your helper is waiting. Come straight out of turn 9 as hard as you can, fast into the hot pits, and brake hard to a stop. Have your helper quickly take all the temps (in less than a minute). Then go back out and run some more, or do a proper cool down lap. That's the only way to get accurate temps.

On Edit: I didn't take Viken's comments as a criticism of you, just the schools that you took.

Longacre makes a good one (IMO) for less than $100.
