IMO auctions are a marginally less reliable data point in the market price of a car. Some buyers get caught up in the moment and over pay.

What is the market? A question that is different to everyone that answers the question.
In my limited experience, auctions are 10% to 50% more what one can find in a comprehensive search of the country in a several month period.
I've also noted that an auction in an "exclusive" location, say Monterey or Las Vegas will get 10-20% more than an auction in say Minneapolis

So to answer your question, yes, there is hype in Monterey
