Three Wheelin'
Low mileage 997 are over $100k
It depends if you are compering likes for likes, still a 25-40k increase in cost vs 996. 997.2 has center lock wheels which require expensive replacement, brakes cost more and harder to work on (have to remove caliper), bigger tires and rims so more $$$$.
For a very fast GT car, the 6 still offers the best value.

Are you referring to this 7.2? I didn't realize prices had dropped so much on these. Very enticing...

Nice low mileage 996 go for 75-82ish, cars with 45k+ miles in the sixties.

There's also this example of a clean 997.1 with 40k on the clock and a ton of track parts/multiple wheel sets for 89k. Sell a set of wheels and whatever set of seats you don't like, and that's a low 80k car.

Do Something!
I keep getting sucked into "What did he finally buy?" and see just more of the same slow dance.
Listen, a 6GT3 Shouldn't Kill You.
It is however, an involved serious very fast car, faster than 90% of the newer Porsches, and infinitely more difficult to drive well. Requires Man Pants, Seat Time, and Thought.
If you ultimately don't have the confidence to own a 6GT3, admit it.
If you're shopping for a deal and you are not shopping for a 6GT3, you're posting in the wrong place.
Limited production, spectacular rewards and ever increasing value, very good looking too. Do something!

Similar to DRPM i also own a 996gt3. Mine was bought from a well known Rennlister. Very fair price and well looked after. Bonus was to get some track upgrades included in the buy.
The 996gt3 is still great value. Extremely satisfying cars to run, especially on track. Runs even with gt4s and 997.1gt3 and some other cars. So you can always find someone to play with.
IMO the only reason to choose a 997.1gt3 is if you prefer the look of the 997. I know some do. I actually think the 996gt3 has aged very well. Didn't like it as much 5-10 years ago.
If money is a deciding factor I would much rather buy a low mile, well maintained 996gt3 with some goodies over a higher mile 997.1gt3.

IMO if tracking is your primary goal for owning the car, 996 GT3. If you just want a GT3 and think you might hit the track a few times per year, 997.2 starts to make more sense. Anything more than that and as others have said, it becomes very costly.
i agree with the above sentiments that you'd only choose 997.1 if the looks did it for you. 996 looks better to me, more authentic (subjective) and is a very similar car to 997.1 under the skin.
I love the idea of another 996 GT3 but will only consider ones with track goodies. I'm just not sure I need the track car, so will re-assess when the time comes. Hopefully at which point GT3 prices have stayed where they are. I just have zero desire to own any other sports car.

Spot on. I owned a 996 gt3, 997.1 gt3, and then got back into a 996. With a few mods and weight reduction the 996 will be faster than a stock 997.1, and very close to a stock .2 (I know that sounds blasphemous, but I' have run my buddy's modded .2 and it was super close once i was in the power band (the additional torque was evident in his car though "below the curve," and makes the .2 more fun n the street because you don't have to wind it out into the higher rpm range to feel the same kick that requires about 5k plus in the 996). I much prefer the look of the 997 but I prefer the way the 996 drives and feels. Wasn't worth the premium for me to jump to a 997.1, but 997.2 is a close call, but now you are talking 30-35k difference in price for a 996 and 997.2 of the same mileage, which is not negligible.

For those who don't know, KW has the 996GT3 figured out, one of our top instructors/drivers up here in la belle Province of Quebec.
