Default What is this tube and where does it go?

I was tending to my dead battery and noticed this clear tube in the battery compartment is not plugged in to anything. I do believe it should be. Where does it go and what is it?

Thank you,

It leads towards the gas tank.

It looks like a battery vent tube. There should be a nipple on the top of your battery where it plugs in. Or if you have a sealed battery, It may be from an old battery....

Battery vent tube...the fact that it isn't connected may account for the corrosion on the tray. Even the more recent AGM batteries (Interstate, Bosch, etc.) have vent tube outlets on both sides of the battery - look near the terminal.
