Help with 2002 Windshield Weatherstrip replacement
The rubber outter piece of the windshield has come lose, and flaps around if I go above about 55mph. The channel that it fits into, has somehow widened and no longer pinches the rubber strip hard enough to hold it against the windshield.
Can these two pieces be removed and replaced, without removing the windshield?
The windshield is perfect. I am just guessing there is no way to remove and replace the same windshield.
Same as I said on Renntech... Take it to a windshield place (Safelite etc...). Of course they can remove it and replace the weatherstripping - they do this all day long. I don't think it will cost more than a couple hundred bucks either...
Respectfully, Yes. I have no doubt that a windshield company that is good at removing and replacing a windshield will do a fine job, removing and replacing the windshield. That is not what I am asking. This is what I asking.....

I like to know the answer before going in and asking a question of a person that may or may not know the correct answer.
Post a pic, lots of rubber gaskets can be replaced without removing the glass. In fact both the front and rear screen rubbers can be replaced, they just pull out and the new one presses in.
I guess this is what threw me..."I am just guessing there is no way to remove and replace the same windshield." I would also think they'd know if you could just replace the gaskets/surrounds... It looks like Dan's got your answer for you though ^^^
There are two pieces to the weather stripping around the windshield. Come to find out, there is a piece that attaches to the windshield, when it is installed and glued in and can not be removed or reused. Then another rubber piece gets installed, into that first piece on the windshield.
The windshield is glued in and can't be removed and installed, like some windshields in older cars.
i took it to windshield shop, and they had some quick setting adhesive that will lock the rubber strip into the channel around the windshield. To fix it "properly", would require removing the windshield and replacing all parts.
The $175 is certainly reasonable... $900 otoh is a little much to swallow... Ouch! I hope they don't crack your windshield doing the weatherstripping... Good Luck!
Got my car back and it looks great. Charged me a bit extra since he had some cleaning up to do from the last windshield job...but i don't mind as this guy was a perfectionist and made everything looking OE again.
The bottom corner of the stripping on my rear window keeps popping out (drivers side). I wonder whether I should just glue it down, or have a new gasket installed...
yes, gluing it down was an option - just not through this shop. his words were "we won't glue it, bring it to a hack shop if you want that kind of reapair"
Dredging up the past I find myself in this predicament as well. Given how they designed the windshield trim I'm very surprised it isn't a hotter topic.
From what I've been able to dig up doing research, there are two parts to the trim. One is a simple rubber strip, the other is a track into which the rubber strip is secured. See items #2 and #3 here.
In my case the track piece has broken and is no longer securely holding the rubber strip in place. (I've taped it down temporarily.) The problem appears to be that the track piece is glued in with the windshield! Which boggles my mind if I'm honest. On my Z4 the windshield trim was completely separate and able to be removed/installed independently.
I'd like to verify that the windshield does indeed need to come out in order to replace the track.
