I second the Black Forest ****. I too also have the 997 shifter on mine and it is designed to fit right over the factory piece. Feels awesome every shift.

ICT also make a gear **** to suit the 996: https://www.innovativcar-tech.de/en/...1-typ-996.html As I don't have one of these, I can't tell you if they are any shorter than stock.

I have a Rennline milled aluminum shift **** that works well. I went with the black one, which in retrospect may not have been a great choice - it looks good, but it gets HOT in the sun.

Porsche OEM has plastic throat. Aftermarket set-ups with metal throat will remain firm indefinitely. I put a Lathe Werks steel on my 997 SSK.

I have an ICT and it IS shorter than stock. I can measure how much when I get home from work.

Well, my bad. I measured and the ICT is only a few millimeters shorter than stock. It must be an optical illusion.

The numeric racing shifter on the 'shortest' setting physically lowers the leaver the shifter sits on down, might be worth looking into it.

Can't comment on the amount the height change as my Numeric is on the middle throw height.
The actual lenght change from pivot is 3/8"-1/2" going from shortest to middle.
I had mine on shortest for a week, I didn't care for it for DD street use. The amount of effort to move lever is substantially more in the lowest setting. But the gear changes are as precise as you can get.
The middle setting is still shorter than stock 996 or 997SSK, which I have had both in my car before the numeric .

I think the middle with the numeric is the way to go. Also I didn't want to cut the carpet.

It is slightly more effort than the stock 997 I used to have but oh so much more rewarding and enjoyable.
