Default 997 shifter surgery for a 996

wantes to replace the shift **** with a 997 as the leather at the top of the **** was really worn. Not that hard. Pry off cap with flat head screw driver
It's a press fit
Old ****
Slide off the leather
Twist off 997 locking cap from under leather
Cut original leather if it's in good condition on the bottom
Attach 997 locking
Fold over
Installed

Good work.

I tried taking that plastic part with the shift pattern off one, was too hard and I gave up.

yeah it feels like your going to snap it or bend the screw driver. Start at the bottom center and pry a little off slowly with pressure. Then insert on the bottom side after the first bottom tab to pry more. Then switch to th top center and pry more. It then comes straight off. This is a great process to just change the leather boot only. Once you have it apart you could take it to any shop and ask them to sew you a new one.

Thanks for this. That gear shift is a pretty pricey bit. I'm guessing this probably opens it up to a lot of aftermarket options.
