Default Engine video...opinions?

Looking at a higher mileage 99 as a "beater". They sent the following video....thoughts?

I know it's hard to tell sound from a video but is anyone hearing anything scary?

And yes...I am aware of IMS, RMS, AOS, etc...

I don't have a good 996 around me to compare to at the moment. The price is low enough I'm willing to take a risk.

Trust me risk with the M96 is never good. If i were you i would get that boxster s that has a rebuilt track engine from FSI.

Sweet Deal IMO!

Thats our "stocker" reconstruction, not a Stage II Track Performer. The engine does have bolt on oil "fixes" though.

It is a steal on the car. I started to buy that one to keep myself, and fit it with my R51. If it doesn't sell soon, I may do that.

Bill, I can't view the video, looks like I'll have to try later.

Hopefully that link works.

The wording in the ad as "fully track prepared" along with supporting mods made me a little confused.

The vehicle is fully prepared, and the engine has the general bolt ons to make it prepared as well.. Its just not a big bore reconstruction.

FSI

I was going through this thread and read the part about fully track prepared as well as the other posts.

FSI has a lot of respect for thier work. That made me curious about the engine and modifications.

Going to the part about GT3 TB on a stock bore 3.2 L.

I try to read most of the posts from well known shops, so yours is one of them.

In reading your posts over the last couple of years, you are consistently recommend against the larger TB on less than 3.8/4.0 litre engines.

Was the complete exhaust system the reason for this application?

thanks
David

The engine that was previously in the car was fitted with these items. Therefore it was natural to re- install them.

The car is back here now to have those items replaced with an IPD plenum that uses the stock throttle body. Sometimes people don't listen to me, until they prove what I say, to themselves.

So yes, this arrangement was too large, just like I said it was, and now we are being paid to correct it. I think they plan to sell this car on BAT in a couple weeks.

As one would expect there is a lot of marketing data demonstating hp/tq improvement to purchase a IPD Comp Plenum and GT3 TB. Most of the time with a disclaimer of a free flowing exhaust and ECU tune.

I bought into it.

While the motor runs excellent, I have thoughts of returning to oem tb , but with an IPD plenum.

Has your company every done a direct before/after dyno ?

Dozens of times. No, I don't share this data.

Back to Bill's question - no, I don't hear anything scary in that video. I won't hold myself out as an engine diagnosing expert, though. To me, every 911 engine sounds a bit "mechanically" noisy, as compared to say an American V-8. But, that M96 sounds decent IMHO.

(BTW, I still chuckle to myself when I remember your "Signature Blocks 'R Us" zinger on Schnell a few years back.)

I am no engine whisperer either, but I couldn't hear much of anything in that video. The sound muffled and bad.

Or maybe I need to clean my ears.

Sounds just like mine which lasted 600kms before the thrust bearing gave up.

Pull the oil cap to see if there is pressure in there (basic AOS check). Review oil and coolant and if possible pull the oil filter and cut it open.

My Engine will be worth more than the price I paid for the car. Or buy Jake's Car and rest easier.
