Default Cylinder Liner

I was getting my engine overhauled , Cummins QSM 11 , and bought a complete EOK.
The mechanic checked the LINERS before installing and suspected two were cracked.I asked him why he thought so as no crack was visible. He said it was a practical test by hitting /sounding a wrench lightly on the liner. Is that how you can tell?

Maybe there is a specific diesel forum that might have the answer for you?

I only recently knew what Cummins is after the Aus Discovery Chanel started airing "Diesel brothers" which has sparked some curiosity in me. Wow the US has some BIG trucks!

If the engine was not manifesting any signs of cracked cylinder liners before you decided to overhaul the engine the cylinders are fine. Probably.

The liners are infused with cast aluminum and can sound different when "tested" by hitting them with a wrench handle. How the wrench is handled/gripped can affect the sound too.

There is a dye test for checking aluminum parts for cracks. Or one can have the castings tested via ultrasonic testing, too. This 2nd technique can find cracks that have not reached the surface.

If you are concerned look into having the cast aluminum parts tested ultrasonically (first choice) or by penetrant dye (2nd choice).

I retired as a Cummins factory trainer, don't know where you got the info of aluminum being infuse in the QSM or ISM liner. I wouldn't accept the method of checking the liner by banging it with a wrench if you suspect it of being crack, use a NDT (non destructive testing) are you using OEM liners and pistons ? I don't ever remember having a liner issue with the QSM or ISM. I've been involved in many overhauls and done many of them.

Is this Cummins you speak of in a Porsche by chance? Or is it pulled from a Saab...

Apparently the motor in question is for a boat.

Cummins QSM11 220-526 kW | 295-705 hp. Proven acceleration and torque performance in thousands of boats.
OP doesn't seem to know whether he's cummins or goins.

QSM engine can be used on anything off-road, such as heavy equipment, generators, and also boats. ISM is for on-road, the ISM plants got moved to China since they haven't met emissions since the start of 2010.

Sorry I misread the OP's post.

We don't get many Cummins engine questions here and my guard was down and I missed the fact the OP was referring to a Cummins engine and not a Porsche engine.
