997 PDK transmission retrofit
Does anyone know if a 997 PDK transmission will fit in a 996. I'm looking at a MK1 996 Cab for my wife in auto, wondering if the PDK transmission would work in it. I know a 997 engine would fit, just wondering it might be worthwhile to shoe horn in the 997 engine and PDK transmission from a donor car.

Dimensions aside, you'd also need a 9A1 motor, a 997.2 ECU, 997.2 wiring harnesses, and probably plenty of other sundry things.
Anything is possible, but worthwhile it is not. Between the components and labor you'd probably end up spending at least what a semi-decent 997.2 costs.

Let's say a 996.1 Cab is 15k, I don't even think you'd get all the parts you'd want (engine, gearbox, harness, ECU, and everything else) for the remaining 25k, to say nothing of labour or the hell that will be getting all the various computers to talk to each other. It's super non-trivial.

A 996 with tiptronic is vastly underrated. I think your wife would be quite happy...as would you when you drove the car. Treat it just like a pdk and you will find it is 90+% of everything the pdk is.

If you're lucky, maybe. I've seen a bunch of base 997.2s in the high-30s and low 40s.

It makes no sense at all to put a 997 pdk trans in a 996. Either purchase a 997 or purchase a 996 MY 2002 - 2004. I own a 2002 tiptronic and the auto transmission is FANTASTIC. It's not just "good" it's great. Is the pdk better yes, but the tiptronic in a 2002 or newer is pretty darn good. The tiptronic in model years 2002 - 2004 is significantly better than the earlier years. I love the tiptronic, mine works flawlessly, and I really can't think of anything it could do better.

Thanks for the input guys. I had an opportunity to buy a MK1 Cab for $6k with a blown motor, I was contemplating putting in the newer PDK tranny if cost would be reasonable, but obviously not.
If I pursue the deal, I will just keep the existing tip in it a rebuild the motor.

The tip is a good unit , dependable
You can put a 997.1 motor in a 996.2 , but it's much more difficult in a mk1 car, the systems have incompatibilities .
If it was my money , I'd look for a mk1 cabriolet , tip with a rebuilt 3.4 .
