KMO,

I have an '03 C2 Coupe that sprung a leak at about 6,000 miles. I've got 9,500 miles now and the fix has held so far. However, after losing an engine at 20,000 miles on my '99 and experiencing a myriad of other problems with that car, I no longer believe my '99 was an unlucky aberration for Porsche. I'm expecting another leak any time now.

My 03 started leaking at about 1000 miles. Or at least that's when I first noticed it.

We have a local 2003 996 owner that had a leak at 8,000 miles and got a new seal.

Think I will keep my 1997 Boxster forever - no leaks. Jeff

I have an '04 996 Cab on order and I have have become very concerned about all the reports of RMS problems. Does anyone have info on what % of 996's are affected? And if the seal is repaired or the engine replaced does it totally solve the problem?

It's the no charge ticking time bomb option that comes with every Porsche 6 cyl engine.

If it leaks and is repaired it can leak again, and if the engine is replaced it can leak as well, and be repaired.

That's not quite correct.

It comes with 996 C2/C4 and boxter engines. I have also heard it being
a problem with 993s but I don't think it's a problem with all Porsche flat 6 engines. Certainly the 996 Turbo doesn't seem to see this problem.

The second part of your comment is correct ;-)

after my 99 RMS was fixed along with the cam covers and the spark plug rings it never leaked again in 30k miles, but then i traded it in for a 2003 so i can't say that it would never leak again, but it did seemingly fix it

Rennlist sponsor Dr Ing. Porsche can you hear us?

If so can you please tell us if you fixed this problem yet?
Will it be a feature of the 997?

I still love this car
