What are the benefits of using ARP rod bolts in a rebuild?
Hello,
As many have read here I'm in the process of rebuilding my engine thanks to a mistake at the track where I spun a rod bearing. I've read that it's a benefit to use ARP rod bolts on the rebuild but my mechanic said that it's not necessary and the stock ones are fine. What are the benefits of using ARP rod bolts?
I'm trying to do all the recommended upgrades for the "street motor".

Not sure about m96 application but some engines have a multi-step rod bolt TTY torquing process, which ARP rod bolts let you forego. Really nice when you're working on your back under the car. And they're reusable, so double bonus.

Stock ones are part of the problem. They aren't as strong as ARP and aren't reusable. I certainly wouldnt use stock OEM ones.
I used ARP bolts for the rods and bearing carrier casing. I used Porsche OE for the head bolts.

FWIW, rod bolt failures were the root cause of the 991 GT3 "car-B-Qs". They are highly stressed parts, and not a place I'd opt for less than the best. When I had my motor pre-emptively redone, ARP rod bolts went in.

Let's be clear, you can not reuse the old OEM bolts. So the issue is:
1.the incremental cost of the ARP bolts
2.the probability of & cost of failure with OEM bolts.
If 1. is the issue ,buy generic 10.9 bolts. Or buy a Kia instead of the Pcar.
2. Rod bolt failure is a well documented issue ( Jake & Wayne for example). The consequence of failure is at least a total rebuild, maybe an entire replacement engine.
I am a cheapskate. When I rebuilt my M96 I used ARP rod bolts & head bolts. I did not upgrade the rods because I will not Track it. But if you plan to, ,upgraded rods are wise. Whatever you do, balance to perfection and inspect for cracks, do NOT change the rings unless damaged and put them back exactly how they came out,pin them,do the ovality measurements to 1/10th of one thou".
These are not my ideas, I am not an expert, I just listen to those who have proved they are.Good Luck with your rebuild !

Well, I can get ARP Rod bolts at a good price. Probably will be buying them. Might as well since I will track my car around 5 times a year. I found that Add online somewhere. Its a good guide.
I already changed my Cylinder sleeves since they were damaged from spinning the bearing but they are not Nickies. The Race shop did them and are also coated with Nicasil or the same coating they use on the Nascar cars they build.

So he has nickies cylinders as nickies are a universal slang term for nikasil cylinders used in many ,many applications, none of which has anything to do with LN. I can't help it if people are close minded
