For therapy after struggling with the M96 my 5.9L turbo diesel Cummins is a joy of accessibility and simplicity.

Agree with the S14. Lots of character, heritage, power and reliable.
I'll also throw the 4G63T in there as well.

For diesels, the 7.3 Powerstroke is still my favorite.

4G63T is hard to beat, in my fast and furious days I had a street awd talon running 12's on a stock motor.

I have a first Gen Duramax in my GMC and it's been making over 600HP for the last 200K miles. All I've ever done to it is a water pump. A few weeks ago it still made 505HP at the rear wheels on my chassis dyno. It shreds rear tires, damn thing still spins pulling a 30' trailer.
Those diesels are tough to beat! My last 2009 duramax was a twin turbo beast tuned by atp truck. Ridiculous to pull a 36' trailer and at 60 mph stand on it to pass and light the rear wheels up.

All good choices but the sound of the motor can be as mesmerizing.

My last two sport cars were rotaries and the sound of my stock 13REW with a straight pipe instead of a muffler always had people coming up and asking me what I had done to the motor to make it sound so good. The 787B was the ultimate rotary. Watch a vid on YT, if that doesn't give you chills, you aren't a motorhead. Heard it run at VIR years ago,the sound is probably still echoing in the trees.

Also a well tuned VQ with titanium exhaust sounds amazing.

All that said, I love the sound of my current flat 6 ;-) Makes me grin every damn day!

I had a modded RD350 that was a blast, would of loved a RZ500 though
