The rest is just bull**** to make people feel better/worse about themselves/others.
Just because it's true doesn't mean you have to call us out on it. Take out all the BS and the forum's post count would drop my 90%! Where's the fun in that?
Go back and reread the reviews when the 996's first came out. While the press was busy RAVING about the "best 911 ever," the air-cooled crowd was stringing together meandering paragraphs where they tried - and failed - to explain how a 911 that was faster and more capable in every measurable way compared to the models it replaced was somehow a piece of crap that deserved to be hated.
*shrug* A quartz Seiko keeps better time than most Rolexes. That means what? Nothing, really. If what you care about is an accurate timepiece, the Seiko is best. If you care less about accuracy and you are a fan of handcrafted analog watches, obviously the Rolex is best. The 996 is a Seiko. It's technically better than the old version in all the ways you can represent with numbers, but some people will hate it because it's new and different.
Couldn't have said it any better. A 911 is a 911 is a 911. It's just what you as the owner want out of it and want it to do. There is never a bad choice unless it's not a 911.

So true. Both cars are absolutely fantastic. Drive a few and you'll find the right one!
The 993 is a great car - Having owned 2, a 96 C4 and later a 95 C2, I can say they are a great driving and great looking machine.
IMO think 996 C4S is better looking and better driving car. The C4S is also better driving than my old 1959 sunroof coupe
Funny I hear all the negative Shiz about 996 but never the 993 issue regarding clogged air passages and the $6500 top end rebuild to remedy. I had to do this repair on my 1996 C4. CEL light comes on and no passy emissions.
All the best to those sucking air and spitting water

because in a lot of cases, a few hours with some brake cable, carb cleaner, and some pressurized air will clear up the SAI passages.
some things seem to have changed since you owned your 993.
And hows this, clogged SAI ports will cause a check engine light. Compare that to IMS failure, D-chunk, Cracked heads, destroyed tensioner pads, etc etc etc (all the way up to the 26 or more failure modes). In terms of money and aggravation, I know which one I would take any day of the week.
Groov, Let me get this straight, looking at the five service invoices, it appears you've put more than $17,000 into this car on top of what you paid for it, correct??? Yikes!

Groove would never do that on a 996 to my best guess. It's probably the receipts of the PO.

Good point! My wife bought me a Rolex for $2300 and when I took it to the Rolex dealer he pointed out, that it was still being made and now worth more than $8,000 new. He would have easily given me double what my wife paid it. Did I sell it? Nope, it's still on my arm keeping *perfect* time. Can't say the same for my Seikos.

I've never seen a Rolex for $2300, except maybe one of JI's ones.
With that said, anyone is kidding themselves in trying to justify a non COSC watch being able to keep time better than a $15 quartz Seiko or Timex.
Whether any of us like to admit it or not, it's really just bling man's jewelry. I'm in the same boat. Wearing my BR-02 today. I've thinned the herd quite a bit but been there and done that. My next one will be a Blancpain since I never had one before.
Both are Rolex models, it's just the 996 and later water cooled models are a Rolex with the new CALIBRE 3255 movement. I am a (Rolex, VC, Pam, Omega , Ball, etc..) WIS as well
