First, I see ads for plastic shopping bags at the top of this thread. Not sure what that means. Maybe you put your Rolex's in them? And what is a Dub show. That burning 993 was sad, but I am unfamiliar with a Dub show.

Is this what the 996 has done to Porsche enthusiasts?

If you happen to own a 996 I would assume you were a Porsche enthusiast??? Who else would own a 911 with THOSE headlights?

So what's your point?

Honestly, I actually prefer the 996 "pod" lights. The bug-eye had its time and feel the 996 lights look better without the light in the front bumper and is a good progression. Compared to the new lights being used in other Porsche vehicles, the 996 lights look more in style to me. It just took some years for the other designs to catch up. I would be considered a long time hard core 911 enthusiast.

On a side observation. I noticed the 996 side of the forum is more fun and less stuffy like the old core Porsche owners use to be. I think we all love and respect our cars as much as any other 911 model.

I see I like a certain color theme.....That's my Seal Gray with my older Diamond Blue Metalic.

my point is there was a time when every Porsche owner had a nice watch that came from the same enthusiasm for quality and engineering as the Porsche they owned. now people view a nice watch as bragging rather than good taste in a quality time piece. what happened here? (that's a rhetorical question)

Gotcha. Well if you were around here a few short years ago, many of us had fun with one member who took his watch Waaaaaay too seriously. Some of us have never gotten over that...

My 03 C2 is my daily driver, and it makes the commute an adventure. I did the IMS thing and water pump, too, so now I just shut up and drive it. The 996 is one of the best deals out there (imo) for a high performance, well made enthusiast-oriented car.

* I wear watches that are as well made as the car, not for bragging rights, but simply because i want to arrive on time and I enjoy the engineering that went into them. It cracks me up to see the IT crowd now embracing wearing a watch, but it's one they have to tap, nudge or otherwise bonk to see the readout (try that going thru the twisties on a Harley)

As one of the aforementioned "IT crowd" I find myself becoming more of luddite. When I come home, I don't want to spend time climbing learning curves for the latest and greatest personal device that keeps me from experiencing the world around me, or digging through menus filled with functions that will rarely be used.

Having recently been bitten by the watch bug that my old Fossil quartz and Garmin Fenix 3 couldn't scratch, it's immensely refreshing to put on a mechanically-driven watch. There's no worries about batteries dying, functions to figure out, or data overload that comes with a smart watch. It just works, and the appreciation for the engineering behind it I'm sure is the same that draws a lot of us to these cars as well.

If I'm going to spend my money and energy on technology, it's going to be in pursuit of furthering my career.

I can't remember the last time I wore a watch, probably 8 years ago. The wife and kids saved up and bought Apple watches this summer so I took a hand me down Fitbit charge hr. I absolutely love it. My sleep patterns suck and this gives me a way to track them. I also like having the date at the push of a button and to see what my heart rate is during various activities. Finally I have a watch that provides useful functionality that my smartphone can't.

What a thread! What's your favorite bottle of expensive red wine to enjoy while admiring your 996 (Wearing your Rolex, of course)?

Let's see if we can fix this...

"There was once a time when orthodontists and liposuctionists and other people living on the outskirts of wealth bought Porsches AND Rolexes to underscore the fact that they make enough money to lease a 911 AND have enough left over for conspicuous displays of wealth and unbridled consumerism like strapping a watch on that cost more than your first two cars combined.

It was a simpler time, a time of thick, musky chest hair and wild 70's porno-looking pubes. A time when we knew just how many drinks it would take for a dental assistant to let us piitb without making her blow chunks on the acid-washed Calvins and white linen shirt. The heady days of gently pressing your Micro-tac against your lush man perm. Murses filled with cocaine and the most suave damn mustaches you've ever seen since Village People quit touring.

Such a shame that you now actually have to converse with people to guess their net worth instead of just checking the garage and the left wrist..."

I hope you know you now owe me a new keyboard after I just spewed Pepsi all over this one. That was Excellent.
