I apologize in advance, but... That is one ugly interior! - no wonder people malign the interiors of these cars so often... I've always had a hard time understanding the hatred for the interior of the 996 (mine is full leather - which I love and I think is very beautiful, albeit a bit spartan) now not so much...

I don't think the interior is stock. As already calls out that the seats are 997 and looks like they swapped out wheel, console and possibly arm rests to match.
Man I would love to take this on as a project.

Any proof of the actual engine replacement? Your posts say you are unsure if it was just a block or full crate engine from Porsche.
This is a gambling man's deal. You can buy it for $5k from OP, see if it is AOS or something simple, if it isn't...sell it again for $5k with disclaimer that car needs a new motor for sure. CA/AZ/NV people, let's do a co-op buy on the car. $1k gets you the timeshare on the car. If it is unfix-able for under $2,500, we dump it back on the market? If it is fixable, we get a dedicated shared track car!
