I'm having an issue with my 43k mile 996 Carrera 2002 that suddenly started to sound akward. It has factoryfitted PSE, the XLF-option. I took it to a specialist who said that one muffler was broken (had a crack inside of it).
When I asked for cost for replacement he said (after research) that you couldn't get your hands on a single PSE muffler but had to replace the entire system for a whopping 4k USD.
My question is if anyone has experienced the same issue? Has anyone successfully welded a cracked muffler or managed to find a replacement?
My mechanic has been very nice and asked if I want to replace to something non-original but I really want to keep my 996 as factoryfitted as I can.
Thankful for any help I can get. Sorry for lousy english, Im from Sweden.
Those mufflers have bad baffles. If it's rattling when you blip the throttle, it's bad baffles. My advise is to go to aftermarket. it will sound better and be less costly. The value of your car will not change one iota.
Pick up a used non-PSE muffler on ebay - lots of them around (about $200). Then get a good muffler shop to cut off the bypass pipe with the PSE valve off of your existing muffler and weld it onto the "new" one. I had the same issue a couple of years ago. A lot less than the cost of an aftermarket system.
Or you can always cut part of the muffler case and have the baffles rewelded. This is commonly done, especially in Europe. Here's a sample pic of where to cut.
Have the same issue with both muffler, I cut both muffler and bright it to a soldering shop. Fix both with steinless steel soldering for 160$. Put back and no more problem. It is not a easy job to sold the muffler because the outside are in SS but the inside are steel. But I highly recommend to fix it it's a cheap fix and PSE always sound better in my opinion
