Default Weekend wrenching

Been busy with the 996 today. So far I have:

- Removed centre console, removed shifter, vacuumed everything, installed FF's Shift-Right solution and buttoned everything up again
- Replaced hood and deck lid shocks
- Installed my EZ-pass (yeah, OK, that didn't take long!)
- 3-in-1 oil to every part of the spoiler mechanism I could find

Plus given rides to my Mrs and both kids at various points. Spacers for the front wheels have arrived but not the bolts, so that'll have to wait.

Then an hour or so ago I discovered my expansion tank cap is leaking. B*llocks. No chance of getting one until Monday morning, although I might call the dealer at Tysons Corner tomorrow and beg them to just get one off the shelf for me.

Ah well.

[edit: It's definitely the original cap - part no on it is 996-106-447-00]

Did you find the spoiler piston lube hole?

At least it's just the cap, not the tank.

One on each side? Think so. Or is there another one?

True. Got a pressure tester on the way just to be sure!

This weekend: Fitted the 7mm spacers, front arches look much better. And traced & fixed the classic "window not dropping" issue on my passenger door, which has also fixed the intermittent alarm / beeping twice on unlock fault I was having. So all in all a productive few hours' work

How are you liking the F1st shifter upgrade?

I like it. The shifter was very sloppy before install, going from 5/6 to 3/4 was quite hit-and-miss. Now it's pretty precise.

I don't really have anything to compare it to, though - I've not driven a car with eg a 997 shifter installed.

I bought both a 997 console and the F1st upgrade kit (for 997). Going to dump the stock shift **** for the F1st aluminum one at the same time. It's on my to-do list, we'll see when it happens but I'm pretty excited to feel the difference when it does.

Glad to hear it tightens up the mechanism though. The 5-4 downshift sometimes feels like it wants to go into a different gate when you rush it (eek!), and the 5-6 upshift is never that smooth either. Compared to the bolt-action precision of a stock BMW shifter, this clearly isn't the same.

There's also a noticeable difference in smoothness between cold and warm, but I guess that's not anything to do with the F1st shifter.

Oh, and I almost forgot, I replaced my sun visor mirror covers this weekend too. Quick, cheap fix but very necessary - passengers always seem to notice the missing covers!
