The Evo had the dreaded curse of blowing up if you were driving up hill in 5th gear at 60mph, especially if you had the AC on. Anything like that with the 996?

No, nothing like that. Well, unless you have slicks on and you happen to be driving a track with extended high-speed sweeping turns. In that case, yes, it is exactly like driving up a hill in 5th gear at 60MPH in an Evo.

Point of order: Does it cost $20K to rebuild an Evo engine? If so, the similarities are becoming eerie.

10k + for stock engine (unless you DIY), 20k is definitely in the numbers if it's anything other than a stock engine.

Not to mention, the dreaded oil issue... can't take banked curves without extra mods. Hell, with a moderate power add you can get the oil starvation coming off the starting line too.

Now you're down the road of slicks... with slicks on the evo, you have to be worried about busting the differential or even the trans on a hard start if you haven't upgraded.

It seems that the answer to your question would be...yes.

Ok, I'm sold! This is by far better than the evo. Granted the acceleration of the evo was better, but that also made it less controllable. I can't believe I can get over 100 in 3rd without hitting 7k RPM, 3rd topped around 80ish in the evo... which means less shifting.

There are so many things I like better, and I'm comparing a car just a few years old to one that is 16.

I'll live with the expensive oil changes and coolant changes. I'm just afraid of the dreaded IMS, guess I'll change it at 100k unless I can confirm it was already done (which I'm working on).

The '99 has the most robust IMSB of all, so don't freak out too badly.

Yeah, spend your energy freaking out about intermix, cylinder scoring, or cracked heads.

Thanks for the reassurance, it definitely eases my mind

Ok, time for some more forum searching. I'm already planning a repair it fund to begin very soon. Hopefully, it won't turn into a modding fund. Thankfully, I've got my trustworthy E30 on the sidelines.
