And so I got a 996
2000 Carrera 4, 6 speed. Was in good shape. Horrible fake wood overlay decals that has been removed now. I like the power delivery and of course the sound. Everything is stock at this point. Needs a new shifter surround as the leather shifter plastic trim is flaking. The faux leather material over center console is def not Porsche grade. The shifter is not as precise as my 928 which i find shocking. Anyways, hoping to learn more about this car. I definitely am liking the flat 6.

Welcome! Great looking coupe! The shifter was my first upgrade as well. Could not stand it. You have several options:
Function first bushings to stiffen up you existing shifter and add feel back to it
997 shifter
B&M SSK (should probably redo the bushings as well)
997 SSK (should probably redo the bushings as well)
Numeric
But careful, once you start modding, it's tough to stop. Also, if your not familiar with service history, it's recommended to do the IMS, RMS, AOS, Clutch, Low temp thermostat, and water pump. It's about 5k at a good indie (cheaper DIY) and then you have all of the service history you need.

Car looks great, 997 rims look good and have the correct spacers which is great.
As for the shifter there are lots of modifications and configurations. The overall coconscious of the standard 996 shifter is it's sloppy to start with.
You can look into:
- 996 B&M/Factory SSK
- 997 standard shifter (best of both worlds, slightly shorter than 996 and more precise)
- 997 SSK
- Numeric racing (most expensive but the best and has 3 different throw length settings)
- 997 GT3 (same as standard 997 but with metal bushings)
- Function first upgrade kit (can upgrade all the above shifters to metal bushings does not change throw length)
Cheers!!
@slackker you replied exactly what I posted but you beat me to it!!

Sweet ride, I have the very same color year and model except mine is a Tip. Just installed a new AOS in it since my old one took a dump while joy riding this weekend. Congratulations on your purchase.

Lol, if it feels awesome, why try another shifter? Unless, you are already at the end of your mod list of course.
PO may have already upgraded yours or it just fits your shifting style. I was literally missing gears (staying in neutral) with my original one when shifting aggressively. That's why it was first on the list.

Thanks for the information. I'll prob look into a short shift kit. The shifter has a sway to it, maybe loose? The 928 is very mechanical and direct with a short shift.
Only issue is the PO had no maintenance record as he rarely drove it.
Car has an intermittent issue with the abs/psm dash warning which appears to be very common.

I have the standard 997 but im always itching for the next best thing. Considering the function first bushing upgrade. Highly recommend the standard 997 though it's brilliant. Only thing I dislike is the way it comes out of reverse and the plastic makes a click noise. Although I'm just to try it with the centre console back in my car!
