Default Replacing convertable top on 996

The rear plastic zipper window became delaminated and ripped on my 2001 911 carrera. I have always been all about DYI but this is something out of my normal relm of projects. Anyways, I went ahead and ordered a new outer canvas top from german auto tops in Hollywood but turns out no instructions are included. Has anyone ever taken on this task? Any tips would be more than helpful.

I did it on my old FC RX7 vert but never on a 996. On the FC it was pretty damn easy.

I am very much a DIY owners. But I read through the shop manual on this and talked to a couple of people familiar with the process. After that I took it to a guy my Indy recommended. It is a big job that experience helps with.

I wonder which manual would have a better step by step. The FSM or bently? If anyone can find out I'll order it ASAP.

I got some heavy thread and canvas needles, along with a pliers, and was able to sew it back up. Added a bead of silicone and it was fine.

Doesn't look OEM, but it does the trick.

Cost about $15 and took maybe 2-3 hours.

I took my top off to have a new window sewn in and can tell you it's not easy .The shop manual is ok . But you have to follow the steps exactly and it's not an easy read .This is one of those cases where experience is a real time and mistake saver .One of the trickier parts is the headliner around the rear window and that damn zipper .
My suggestion would be to get the shop manual -read it and see if your comfortable taking the project on and it is a project .

Now that is what I call a great DIY man. Well done. Using the old noggin rather than the bank balance.
