Did my first oil change on my own....not an unpleasant experience. Found nothing in metallic in the pulled apart pleats but this did come tumbling out. Gonna assume it's a piece of the timing chain guides....can anyone confirm, deny. Seems like pliable plastic type material but very shiny on one side. anything to be concerned about? Thanks for any and all replies....
If your car is of the IMS bearing vintage, could that be a piece of a deteriorating IMS bearing, inner seal? I don’t know exactly what the seal looks like, but it’s black and will be made of a type of stiff, hard rubber.
Pliable plastic (like) material is likely excess camshaft cover sealant or excess sump plate sealant. There may be other places that sealant is used.
When the parts are bolted together excess sealant can get squeezed out and form a flashing. Over time this can break off and end up in the sump or even in the filter housing, though often going through the oil pump gears tends to shred the larger pieces into smaller pieces.
If it was IMSB seal you'd see a lot more bearing seal material debris in the filter.
If it was a cam chain guide cover it would be very hard (composite) plastic and if the guide was indeed failing a lot more debris.
Absent any other signs of trouble and no untoward noises or engine behavior and no CEL, I don't see anything in the pic to worry about.
