There's no such thing as being too careful when you're about to buy a used 911.

Interesting note: The tech mentions the lack of any ignitions "beyond" range 2 - but the 996 ONLY has 2 ranges. Range 1 ignitions occur when you bounce the car off the rev limiter during exuberant acceleration and are mostly of an indication of whether the previous owner(s) beat on the car a little; range 2, which the subject car had a few, are downshift over-revs that can cause serious engine damage.
While it's easy to armchair quarterback stuff like this, what seems like a subtle distinction could actually be crucial information. A 996 with a couple hundred range-2 ignitions fairly recently is potentially much worse off than a 997 with the same data point. If you've ever watched a YouTube video of some boy racer accidentally downshifting his Integra from 5th to 2nd instead of 5th to 4th, you know what a type 2 ignition is and what it can do to a car.
It would be really cool to get the list of recommended repairs (the items the $5K number was based on). I suspect that the RMS/IMS weeping was the largest single item, and until the transmission comes off, you don't really know which (or both) is needed. Since this was supposed to be a project car, I assume the buyer(s) are handy with a wrench, and the 996 owner in me is curious how much of that $5K could have been addressed with a weekend, a couple of deliveries from Pelican, and a case of beer...

WOW!!!!!!! that 1991 Porsche looks exactly like our 996, no wonder the air cooled community hate us. Well this confirms this days any one with a smart phone can be an automotive journalist without going to school
