Default How much skill/experience is needed to install an oilpan?

The car needs a new oilpan :-( So time for an upgrade :-)

I've decided to go for Porsche's X51 Motorsports oilpan. No, not the most aggressive engine protection around, but probably the best fit for me.

So the question is, can pretty much any mechanic install this? (In which case I'll do it very close to where my car is parked.) Or do I need to go to the best Porsche specialist in town? Or something in between?

Thanks for any insight about this!

I installed my FVD deep sump kit and pan. Super easy job. It took longer for the oil to drain than to install the new pan.

Forgot to say, just be very careful not to put excessive sealant. Check out Jake's video. It has all the tips.

We have a deep sump DIY on our site for the 996 as well. Just click back to the Porsche Boxster 986/987 Technical Articles and then click on the 996/997 articles and it's under engine.

Hmm, it had started to look so simple, but then there's the sealant. Not too much, probably need the right sealant, definitely don't want to forget the sealant ... . So if I have the nearest auto service do it, I'll forever be wondering if they did it right. :-(

We used Loctite 5900 to seal the flange surfaces in our article. It has all of that info in there for you.

I did this a few months ago and documented the work here: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...n-install.html

I liked the Loctite 518 instead of the 5900 for sealing the pan. It's a much more forgiving product.

I did mine a couple years ago (LN deep sump kit and stainless steel baffle). Used Loctite 5900. No big deal.

Jake's videos of the sump kit installation were helpful -- Part 1 is here:
