Default Transmission jack placement for tiptronic?

A quick look under my 2000 C2 shows me that there is a huge pan under the automatic transmission. Before I start removal I'd like to know where the best place to put a transmission jack is from those who've actually done it.

I guess what I'm asking is if the transmission pan would support the weight of the transmission if a jack is placed under it. My guess is no, but I don't see any other way.

No, don't do it. That is the sump pan and it is not going to support the transmission weight. Cannot find a good article on automatic transmission removal. Why are you doing it?

I'm doing the IMS job. There's really no other option other than placing the jack at the pan... every other automatic trans is done that way and my plan will be to distribute the load with some plywood between the pan and the transmission jack.
If all goes well, I'll post some info since there seems to be nothing on this.

I would make a cradle out of some 2x4's and space it so it provides support on the rear transmission support and the bell housing side, then use that cradle to jack under the transmission. Might also think about putting some wheels on it so once the transmission is down you can roll it out from under the car. It would also be useful for running a strap around the cradle and transmission to keep it from rolling off the cradle.

I did find a Pelican Parts tech article on a manual transmission removal that might be helpful http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarti...on_Removal.htm

This has some good tips http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic...al#entry238787

Buy a Bentley Manual for your year/model/transmission type.

Thanks, but I've seen all of those write ups and they don't answer the specific question.
The problem with making a cradle that big is trying to get it balanced properly, but when you see new tiptronic transmissions, they are on a pallet and resting directly on the pan. So I'm thinking that using plywood on the pan is the way to go for lowering / lifting.

Here is one of many used 996 tiptronics stored this way. Looks to be resting on the pan?

IIRC, engine needs to be dropped when doing IMSB work on tips. This vid shows engine/tranny being dropped as one

I've actually seen that video too, but there's really no reason to think that they need to come out together. The tip is a lot bigger than the manual and thus a bit more difficult to get out, but it can be done. It just takes more time.
I'll post my findings when I'm done.

Best of luck. FWIW, my indy prefers the method shown in the video (I also have a tip wih an IMSB upgrade planned very soon......along with RMS, AOS, etc.)

May I ask what kit you have picked for the upgrade?

Yeah...one with a busted bellhousing, so who would care at that point. Also, from my reading of one of the articles I posted, depends on whether you have the GF or MB transmission. The later model MB triptronic transmission has to come out with the engine. At least that is what it said. Good luck with your project.

I decided on the EPS kit.

Very true. my MK1 is a "ZF" transmission, not GF, which is why I'm doing it this way.

Bumping up this thread for a bit of closure. The best place to put the jack is directly under the tiptronic pan, as close to the engine as possible and off to the left (driver's side) with the differential just touching the jack surface. Any other place and the transmission is off balance.
I'll write up the full removal and replacement when finished.
