Default Happy: back to 996 :) from a 991

Dear all,

Today I got my new 996 and wanted to share my happiness with you all.

Previously I was driving a 991 c2s convertible and before that a 996 4S 6speed. I realized the cost and experience (heavy car, filtered experience) of the 991 was not for me - so I looked for my dream car, black black aerokit and as much factory as possible, here it is!

2002, 6 speed, carrera 2, aerokit, sport suspension, PSE, Porsche traffic pro GPS, 55k miles

the car is 100% like it left the factory, all options on the sticker

will post more pictures soon

It would be nice to know exactly why you prefer the 996 over the 991. Not something I would have expected

the 991, I had it for 20 some '000 miles, daily use (carrera 2s, dark blue, black leather, black top, 21 wheels)

let's start with the positive:

smallest gas consumption of any porsche I have driven
convertible perfectly confortable - soft top like a hard top
in board technology - I had the distance adjusting cruise control, it works perfectly like on a mercedes s class
convertible but perfectly rigid
sport mode very fast and great handling / on open freeways went up to 300km/h no problem - 1 hour 250km/h used only 13 liters of gas - incredible efficiency
real 4 seater: rear seats much bigger than previous
image: arriving with the latest brand new 911 is something - but not always positive

negatives now:

big - it feels much wider and longer than the 996 or 993 - you feel far away from the street
the 991 pdk defaults to the energy saving mode, with start stop but most specifically control on the every engine reaction in order to save gas and polution - the car is a catastrophy to drive like this, one of the slowest car I have ever driven, and then it quicks down and you might kill somebody because it comes at once
electric steering: you feel away from the road - it works well but there is just that little less connexion
you need to program the car for what you want it to do, when you go from cool to fast, you need to first think about pushing the buttons the right way etc
too many gears...
drop in value: 991 are not like the old time porsches - values drop very fast like any standard car, MBenz etc - 18 months driving a 991 cost you much more than buying a 996 even if you throw it away at the end
most importantly: if you post it on sport hard suspensions, it is a great track car, but very unconfortable
there are so many functionalities in the computer and so many buttons on the dash that you end up focused on other stuff than driving
pdk is cool, much more efficient etc than standard gear shift - but at the end, I want a car to enjoy driving, and for me the experience includes a classic gear shifter

the 991 is a great car, don't take me wrong, but the experience is not any more what I like from porsche: light small sport car but humble etc

Here, let me distill that down for you

Seriously though, if I knuckled under to fashion and got an automatic Porsche I would be out of it quick as $h!t through a goose. I'd rather drive a Golf TDI with a stick than a 911 with PDK, and I've driven several of both. Just a matter of personal taste, no disrespect meant to the guys who like the automatic, but in the end, one buys a Porsche out of personal taste, not necessity.

Gorgeous 996!

Unfortunetly for me, I grabbed a base 996 due to its price. Now I'll be spending money In my future for a gt3 aero kit. But I knew that when choosing my car.

Welcome back! Enjoyed your perspective on the differences with the new cars. I think every manufacurer is facing the issues you raise because there are so many compromises that need to be made now, versus just limitations in the past. I know they'll continue to sell more cars but I have some real concerns about these models when they get to be the age of our cars, and depreciation is the least of the issues I fear. Gonna keep mine as well, it has what I need.

oh really?! I was just going to add did the same. Swapped a 991C2S PDK for a 996 manual. The steering and PDK were biggest disappointments in the 991.1 for me.
Great build quality, but felt like a fast Audi to me.

Congrats!!! The 996 is my favorite generation and my 996 is my forever car....however, its hard to say that I have ever driven a better car than my 991 Turbo S....its got to be the best all round sports car ever built....so ultimately I think it all just depends what you want it for.

+1

I loved my 996, and I loved my 997. The 991 TTS is simply fantastic. I always wonder about the comments on electric steering. I find the electric steering (with RAS) in my 991 to be superior to the hydrolic steering in my 997. I suppose it does come down to personal preference.
