That sounds familiar

Thanks again for everyone's input. Before owning my 996 I've owned 5 Mustang's, all of which had off-road exhaust set ups, so, I use to loud exhaust. I know the tone is much deeper from a V8 versus a V6 so, my question, is the note much higher pitch that it's kind of unbearable to listen too?

Nice video. I wish we had AXs like that around here...ours tend to be random(i.e. hard to follow) cones scattered about a sea of asphalt.

I toyed with the idea of bypass pipes for the 996 years ago but I figured why alert the cops to my presence any more than I have to. I'd like to hear the pipes on a 996/997 in person though...in all the years I have yet to hear them firsthand.

Different muffler brands will yield different "tone" and "timber" depending what sort of sound you want. The bypass pipes, besides increasing volume and loudness, sort of have their pitch dictated by the catalytic converters.

Overall, 996's tend to have a lower pitch, but not as low as American v8's. I had a big block vette once that would rattle the house windows.

The Fister, gundo, pse gives that nice brassy rattle and extra volume without drone or being loud all the time, but increase with the right foot.

YouTube and manufacturer websites help, but nothing beats hearing them in person or getting help here. There are some brands that fly under the radar that offer unique tuning. Check these out: fabspeed, tubi, Mille miglia, M&M, dansk, kreissieg, etc... All seem to offer street to crazy loud to straight pipe systems, just depends on your ears and wallet.

I went from stock to Mille Miglias to Tubis back to Mille Miglias. The milles are lower pitch and growl like a v8, whereas the Tubis are higher pitch and scream on the high end like the Italians, but not as loud as the Milles.

Hope this helps

I've just done my own bypass and it was really easy. I bought the pipes here:http://www.porscheshop.co.uk/ (I'm in the UK) and they took just half an hour to put on.
My boxes were in good condition but it was still easier to remove them both complete with the 3-bolt plate that attaches them to the chassis rather than doing it the normal way and removing the two upright bolts. They just didn't seem to have enough room to remove them and the 3-bolt plate has easier access and was simple to do.
The car is loud but its a gorgeous sound, particularly compared to the standard output which is quite poor imo.
It's easy enough and cheap enough to do and put back if its too loud for you.
Sadly they're too loud for my local track on track days as their limit is just a 100db (3 feet away at 2000rpm)

Will sell for $75 plus shipping.

Anyone man enough??? (I am not.)

I had a local muffler shop do a Gundo hack on my mufflers a couple of months ago. These bypass pipes are definitely louder than the Gundo-hacked mufflers.
I would like to try these.
