996.2 sterio options , iPod input etc.
I've got a 2004 996 and it's got the bose premium option . I really like the sound but I'd like to have an iPod/ iPhone input for it .
I'm also very open to changing the head unit as long as it fits well.
I'm not looking to add satnav or a ipad face.
What are my options? Any reccomendations ?

I am no expert but I believe that like me... You have a head unit that uses the MOST fiber optic link.
I believe the most elegant way to do what you want is with a Dension 500 gateway.

According to Dension, only the Gateway 500 and the Gateway 500 Lite are compatible with our cars with MOST.

The car I bought has the iSimple Tranzit unit. It works on FM (you set the freq using their app) once you pair the phone. After getting the car back home I downloaded the app, paired my phone and set it to preset button 10 (furthest right). I have the CDC-23 with changer and Bose so it's the MOST set-up. Looked it up on Amazon and it is inexpensive, user friendly and has good reviews. Looked at a car with the Dension Gateway and it seems nice but is relatively expensive.

I have a alpine ilx-007 head unit. It's a basic head unit that relies solely on connecting the phone to it. Uses Siri for a lot of stuff. Great head unit. I have Bose also

I planned to put in a hard wired in the FM bluetooth module when I get around to it.
I.e. the unit is hard wired and goes like this: car aerial -> unit that receives Bluetooth signal --> aerial into original head unit. This is the only option I found to keep the original head unit and use bluetooth.
I looked into the Dension it has a bluetooth unit but from what I read the quality of bluetooth -> Denson isn't great but for AUX and MOST capability its the best.

Here's what I used:
Alpine CDE-HD148BT head unit, got an adapter plug in kit for it so it was plug and play
also updated the speakers while I was in there
JBL GTO 328 speakers – dash and rear
JBL GTO 528 speakers – doors
Left the Bose sub as is
Very happy with the results

Becker Autosound in New Jersey will take the CDR23 head unit and connect an aux input that is fitted into one of your dashboard dummy rocker panels, and mail it back to you, for around $200 or so. This is a direct connection that overrides the signal from the tuner (not FM modulation), although I have read that it is a mono signal, not stereo.

I bought a FM transmitter and really have been surprised at how well it works. Get one that plugs into the lighter socket and connects to your phone via blue tooth. This link will help you find the best station to use in any location.... Not as clean as the above but for $20.... its not bad.
