Default Passenger side mirror

The passenger side mirror came off the car the other night in my hand, just the mirror, not the whole assembly or anything, has anyone else had this problem and if so what was the solution that worked the best, re-gluing it with a particular product, or using one of the double sided tape products I have seen? I would expect more from Porsche, I have never had a mirror fall off any other car I have ever owned. Thanks for any input.

I imagine it snaps in place in the mirror housing assembly. If you need a mirror, I actually have a left and right assembly with mirrors in them, I would sell it to you cheap.

Here is a basic procedure how mirrors are captured into the auto adjust mechanism, you can see the pictures. This is for an Audi, but is probably similar for a Porsche. Just scroll down the page to see the pictures.

Yup - I had the same thing happen, except mine fell off while driving on the highway at about 80 mph leaving a small scratch in the paint on the passenger side door. I was on the way home from a track day so I was just happy it didn't happen on track. The fix was a replacement (just the glass) from the P-car dealer. If I remember correctly it was maybe $30 or $40. They installed it for me (no charge), so I'm not certain but I think it had double sided tape. I think there was also a wire attached to it.

You must have been handling it for some reason or other for it to, as you say 'fall off in your hand'. Then you say "I would expect more from Porsche". Maybe Porsche didn't expect a heavy handed guy to be arsing around with their mirror in the first place. I suggest you find out the correct way these mirrors are attached when they leave assembly and go in that direction. Porsche will have assembled it the correct way. You will have dis-assembled it, the in-correct way. No fault on Porsche as you suggest.

I thought the same thing when the mirror fell off my car. However, it was shortly after I bought the car so I have no idea if some "heavy handed guy was arsing around with the mirror" before I bought it.

Nothing better than a Hurdi Hunch on a Sunday morning.

I had this happen on my 951 last year. I bought one off eBay for under 10 bucks. Based on the number of different vendors and items listed, it must be a fairly common occurrence.

Hurdi - We need to see more of you - it's been a little boring in here.

Ya know Hurdi, I have seen a lot of your dumb *** comments before, and thought how can an old guy make so many dumb *** comments, lol. Now for what actually happened, I was driving down the road, looked over to see the passenger side mirror looked like it was vibrating, so my first thought was great, somebody hit my mirror when I parked it at the last stop. I checked the movement while I was driving, it worked fine, so I pulled over to check how secure the mirror was and it just came off in my hand when I touched it, so if I hadnt stopped I would have probably had a scratch and dent like mentioned above. So I have my mirror safely in my car, trying to figure out how to affix it back to the car the best way so that it will stay put. Once again I have never had a car where the mirror has just fallen off the car, without any heavy handed guy arsing around with it at all, so once again, fault and disappointment back to Porsche!

I guess I will have to be very careful the next time I put a wash leather to the side mirrors. Same goes when I close the doors in case one of them falls off. If it's not one thing it's another with these 996 cars.

Please maintain some respect for our eldest naturalized Brit - it is not acceptable to refer to his hair-brained conclusions as "dumb-*** comments." The proper term, as pointed out by DTM, is a "Hurdi Hunch."

Hurdi Hunches can cover a variety of topics, from mirror glass handling to maintenance to car upgrades.

It takes some time to master the Hurdi Hunch - for example, the ability to differentiate between a stupid, ghetto modification made to a 996 (which is NOT OK according to Hurdi) to screwing some Home Depot gutter guard to the front of your car (which IS acceptable). Hang in there, you will eventually get the hang of it.

Please try to avoid future heavy-handed **** play unless your post includes a Brazzers logo.
