Engine #

Looks like it is a 3.4 from a 99 car that was remanufactured. AT is the indicator there, I believe.

Really.. I wonder why a 99 would have this motor in the first place. Maybe a warranty replacement from Porsche due to an IMS or whatever issue? If a remanufactured, should there be an IMS concern as well? Or, was there an updated 3.4 that doesn't have a serviceable IMS?
I would guess that it is a factory replacement under warranty for any possible number of reasons.
Is the engine out of the car?
Unless it has been fitted with a direct oil feed IMS Solution, the part is a possible wear item and should be addressed when you replace the clutch, no matter what.
Read the IMS sticky thread if that is where this is headed.

I also have AT on my engine serial number and it means a remanufactured engine from Porsche. As I did not any documentation I don't know when the engine was installed. I know it is a 2000 motor . Probably has the double row bearing. Just curious to know if there is any data on the reliability of the remanufactured engine versus the original. It is important to have documentation as it avoids maintenance questions and doing maintenance that was not necessary.I contacted the dealer in the maintenance book and could not get an answer as to when the work was done. There data was not up to date.It is nice to know that my engine has fewer miles than what the odometer tells me but still a lot of ??????
Bubrubb,
It's in my car. I'm being told that my IMS bearing isn't serviceable and that it doesn't match up with the LN Engineering version. Upon doing some additional research, I was told that the motor could possibly be a warrantee replacement but was upgraded to an 05/06 motor. This is why I am asking if anyone could run this number. Why wouldn't the IMS bearing match up with the one that's currently in the car?

I am really surprise that you were told it was not serviceable. The X in the serial number means a 99 engine. I have a Y which means a 00 engine. I don't see how a 99 engine was modified to a 04 or 05 and the bearing unserviceable. I would get another opinion.

There is another thread on this, without much resolution other than Jake Raby chiming in that it needs visual inspection.

That is about all the help I can offer at this point.

It's a '99 3.4 engine according to your serial #, and if that's the case, the bearing would be serviceable (ie: replaceable). AFAIK, starting in mid-'05 engines, the bearing could not be removed without disassembling the engine. If the whole engine has already been replaced though, why worry about the bearing?
There was a thread awhile back on engine serial # that helps explain what you have https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...al-number.html
M96/03 means engine type
AT means remanufactured or austauschmotor
Next three are year it was remanufactured which may not match the year it was installed.
S means x51
66w is 1998
66x is 1999
66y is 2000
661-665 is 2001 - 2005
Last numbers are serial code.
The first '6' is the # of cylinders. The 2nd '6' means it is a normally aspirated engine (except for the Carrera 4 model engine in 1999). This '6' could be could be a '3' (GT3 engine), or '4' (turbo-charged 3.6l engine), or '8' (Carrera 4 N/A engine).
The 'Y' is the year of engine manufacture. 'V' is 1997, 'W' is 1998, 'X' is 1999, 'Y' is 2000, then digits are used starting with '1' which is 2001.
My info is the remanufactured engines retain their original serial numbers.
M9601AT66X66836
M96 01 engine type
AT - reman
66X - 1999
6 cylinder/normally aspirated
So I would say you have a reman 99 3.4L engine, more than likely with a double row IMSB (very low failure rate). Live and let live!!

Billyboy,
Since this is very first 911 experience, I just want to be safe and precautionary. I'm actually not worried about the IMS since it's a remanufactured motor. That's actually a good thing and one less thing for me to worry about. Thanks for the insight...
