Default Wheel help

Our wheels look like crap as all the "high gloss" chrome has been flaking off for a long time. She can't make up her mind on what she wants to replace them with though beyond "I like my wheels"...

So I'm always on the look out for a new set that I can stomach the price knowing they are just going to do the same thing

I found such a set locally, but his are apparently for a wide body car. I know some people run wide body wheels on their NB cars, but the whole offset thing confuses me and I can't really visualize the differences that the online calculators spit out.

So right now they are 18x8 with a 52mm offset up front and 18x10/65 on the rear. The ones I have a line on are 18x8/50 and 18x11/45.

Will they fit without rubbing or needing the fenders rolled? Anyone have pics of such a setup on their car?

IMO, the front wheels only move a couple of mm so no problem there. The back wheels are significantly different and would move out 33mm more (1.3 inches) than your current set up.

The calculator I was looking at said 0.77" would be the outward change on the rear. Is that not correct?

By my reckoning your rears will move out 20mm from 65mm to 45mm (20/25.4 = 0.787")

That's more like I was seeing on the calculators, but the trouble I'm having is visualizing what that really means.

It also means that it would be about 1/4" deeper in the wheel well too. Would that cause issues with it hitting anything as the suspension travels?

Not only will the rears move outwards on the car about 0.75", but because the wheel is an 11" wheel vs. a 10" wheel, it will grow an extra 1/2" towards the outwards direction and also 1/2" towards the inboard side.

The inboard side plane will essentially move 1/4" towards the outward side. That is the 3/4" change in offset minus the 1/2" change increase in width.

The outboard side plane will move the change in offset (3/4") plus another 1/2" due to the width of the wheel difference, so 1 1/4" total.

This change on the outboard side, plus any meat that hangs over the side of the wheel in the tire, could cause rubbing, that's what you need to check, is the outboard side.

If the guy has wheels with tires, go over there are try the rears on.

Thanks Paul I think I understand now. It looks like even though the calculator asked for the differing widths, the difference info it gave me was only the offset difference

No tires on the rims so trying the fit won't work.

Thanks for the help guys. I think I'll save the headache for another time and keep looking for the NB versions

They have some bad curb rash too from its days commuting to and parking in DC so even painted they'd still look less than great. Of course I can't get her to pick a new coating either

I do need to find a local shop and get a professional opinion of options.

A new set in boxes would have been a good x-mad surprise though. Harder to surprise her with refinished wheels since they are the only set so the car would be gone for the duration.

dont let a amature refinish your wheels, it will cost the same as having a great refinish job done by a pro, use a shop that can handle all types of repairs
