Default Talk me off a ledge

First rennlist post in damn near 5 years. Sold my 928 back then when I picked up a 308, and haven't really looked back except for the annual pilgrimage to the Petit Le Mans and the Porsche corral.

but

A couple weeks ago I helped a good friend install GT3 swaybars on his 2001 and then made the criminal mistake of driving it.

Dammit.

Ya see I've been perfectly happy daily driving a 1990 ZR-1 for the last couple years, fantastic car, one of the highest performers you can get for the money. Amazing road machine, comfortable, reliable, King of the Hill. I even tracked it hard at Road Atlanta the day before I helped Ken install the swaybars. One 5-minute drive in his car and I forgot how much I liked the ZR-1, how well it handled and braked, how much fun the esses and turn 5 were, how it charged up the back straight, how it wasn't even breathing hard when it was time to go home. Like I said, fantastic car.

I've been looking at every 996 for sale for the past two weeks. At this point my wife understands my automotive affliction, so if I tell her I'm considering a change, she'll roll her eyes and give me a hard time for a month...but she'll be ok...I think.

The 308 is going up for sale and I'm 90% sure the ZR-1 is right behind it...and then what?

Come to the PCA autocross at AMS this weekend and I'll give you a ride in my '03 C2.

Maybe that will help?

Do they still run non-Porsches in the visitor class? I was on the PCA board many years ago, had a lot of fun back then. I've run 996s on the track so I'm pretty familiar with the handling, really appreciate the invitation. Might be fun to see how the old Corvette stacks up against the Porsches!

It's been many years since I drove a 911 of any vintage and I had conveniently forgotten how amazing they feel. But 5 minutes behind the wheel and I remembered every tactile nuance, totally different from a front engined animal like I've been driving for the last several years...different from the 308 for that matter. Yeah I'm having a crisis.

By way of torment - within your GT3/996TT budget range - check what you can get in a Boxster(GTS?)or Cayman S Sport . Drive both. If it is handling you want and no risk of snap oversteer it will complicate your decision - in a good way :-).

Shmark, sorry no help here.

I sold an airplane, and the family said I had to have *some* type of project, so I went car shopping. Was convinced I wanted a Z06 'Vette. Not a regular one, had to be a Z06. The feeling of power when gettin' on it just put a grin on my face.

#1 son has a '14 Cayman S, so he strongly suggested I look at a 996, just to make sure I'd exhausted all options. Well, local non-Porsche dealer suddenly listed a Speed Yellow '01 C2. Went and drove it. Bigger grin, but this time accompanied with a pronounced "day-ummm" exclamation.

Still grinning. Only issue is that I'm over any speed limit around here before I hit 3rd gear.

You know you want it.

Cayman is seriously tempting. I've put some miles on one and it's a beautiful car, no doubt. But the 911 is just another level, bigger displacement, handling style I really enjoy. FWIW I'm definitely not in the GT3 range, as much as I'd like to be. When the 308 goes, it will be funding more rental properties, so I'm looking at a standard 996 to fill the ZR-1 shaped hole in the garage. It's worth right around $20k so it's a really nice trade, and I'll have some mad money available.

That's what I'm talking about, really any year 996 that I can set up exactly like I want.
