Change IMS chain tensioner without changing oil?
I'm pretty sure it's impossible to remove the IMS chain tensioner without first having drained the oil... but just in case .... is it possible?
I'm asking because I recently changed my oil and I don't want to have to do it again if I don't have to.
Thanks.

Which one? There are three...wait...okay you said IMS chain tensioner.
Here is a Pelican Parts Tech Article on 996 engine valve train repair...steps 15, 16, 17 are on the chain tensioners http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarti...ain_Repair.htm
Looks like it can be done without draining the oil. I've never done this so maybe someone with more experience can weigh in.

You can drain the oil into a clean drain pan and set the pan aside and then return the oil to the engine after the work.

The tensioner should be very close to the top of the oil so you should not loose much even if oil comes out (most likely not). If you use a jack, maybe you can jack up the whole passenger side of the car to lower the oil level on that side.
