Well , on a tight budget , pelican makes a kit to do exactly what you propose for $165.
It comes with an oeM type bearing , better seals and an improved bolt .

It's certainly a better option than doing nothing .
And offers some peace of mind if not ideal risk management .
A handy guy with a hoist could diy change it out every 20-30k miles
This might answer some of your questions. Been there done that.

@lahalte - thanks for the plug

@KrazyK - thanks a lot for sharing, very interesting, I bookmarked your page. 100$ IMSB swap sounds just right for me. Mind PMing the parts list as I've had hard time finding them in your post. Thanks!

IMS! Replace original IMS with same IMS? Cool! Now we have something to talk about.

Here is a twist: Is IMSB really the problem? Or is it cylinder scoring that leads to IMSB failure? Or is it engine case misalignment?

And why not? If we look at it from preventive maintenance point - when we replace our OEM timing belt on a given car, as preventive maintenance, what do we replace it with - TA DAM! another OEM timing belt.....

Note if your stock is a dual row, switching to a single row is a step backward.

Not on every car. Replaced the OEM belt on my Esprit with a recommended non OEM Gates belt made of better material.

Need to see if mine is dual or single, 2001 US spec C2

What I meant by OEM is "built to OEM specs" one - just like your Gates timing belt.

Hey, I got a chuckle out of it.
Plus, you got Schnell to say I'm smart. So, who looks like the idiot now. (OK, don't answer that)
It made my day - little victories still count.
