Three Wheelin'
I want to pick up a car like that at around $12k. get some winter tires on it, make sure the front wheel drive works, and beat the crap out of it as a winter car.

Well I love my 2006 S430 4matic daily driver and it looks, runs, drives and rides beautifully. But with almost 190k miles, I consider it a disposable car at this point. I might get $5,000 for it if I try to sell it, so I will just drive it til it dies and sell the carcass since its worth more than that to me.
I would look at the car he is considering in the same light. Buy it assuming the engine could die at any moment. If it does, you're at peace with it. If it lasts another 40k miles or more, then join me in the high mileage lottery winners club.

I agree, there is a risk factor. You buy a car like that to keep forever, knowing that it will either die, or it will be worth almost nothing come selling time. I'm racking up miles on mine though, not trying to save it for anyone. Still refuse to eat in it though
Too many things that are unappealing about this particular car though.

Actually he is now looking at a different car. It is still high mileage but a lot more appealing. He sent me the link in a private message but I couldn't reply privately. I will let him post the link if he wants to share it.
