Storing/ maintaining my C4s
#16
If you're not going to use it then sell it. Buy another when the circumstances are right. I know it's hard (I do) but if the car's just sitting there and it's too much of an inconvenience or hassle to take it out then don't waste your time worrying about it. It doesn't matter what anyone says else says or thinks about your driveway or whatever your reason is for not taking it out...whether it's the worst or the best reason....at the end of the day it's your reason. And, we've all been there. Sometimes life gets so crazy that doing the most basic things are just too much of a hassle. When life gets to that point, get rid of the distractions that are giving you unnecessary heartache...like the car that's sitting in the garage and going nowhere.

Like I said: There is a solution to every problem.
How you tackle it is your call.

Agree. I'm surprised people still have this notion about stored cars. Drive it and get it hot or keep it properly stored. Prolonged idling is not good for any car, Porsche or Toyota.

I'll buy it, I'm on the hunt for a C4S, there, problem solved. Or, keep it on a charger and drive it once a month, up to temp, get all systems a bit of exercise. Seriously though, I'm having one PPI'd on Tuesday and if that falls through, or if your car is much nicer and well priced, let me know and you'll feel good knowing it went to a good home where it will be driven regularly and tracked occasionally. You'll feel much better.

Totally disagree.
Starting and driving it long enough to bring it up to operating temperature is the best. If all a person does is let it idle for 10-30 min then they may as well not start it up.

As weird as it sounds, I get satisfaction just knowing I have one in the garage, even tough I don't drive it as much as I would like.

Sell.
Wait awhile.
Buy another one later.
We've all had intervals during which Porsche ownership or use was inconvenient: Whether finances, or location, or family needs, or...whatever. If this, and ONLY this Porsche is the love of your automotive life, have it packed away by someone who knows what they're doing, and unwrap it again in 2-3 years. Or, just park it at the office. People do that.
If in contrast it is one in a series, then: sell, and then either buy the same thing in a few years at lower cost, or move up to the next generation (which will also be less costly, by then).
I have the exact same model & year. I had an '02 C4S, which I traded away for an S600: Easier to fit two adults, two kids, etc. Couldn't justify the extra vehicle.
Eventually the time came when I could return to the fold, and justify an extra vehicle. Miss the old one?
Yes. Enjoy the slightly newer and better current one? Yes.
We enjoy our automobiles. But they're like streetcars and gas stations: Another one will come along.
Enjoy the extra garage space and spare cash.

Meh...
If a person has the car already, and can afford it, AND has a place to put it, then no harm in keeping it. They would then be no different than the many, many, collectors of anything.
I'd just make a point of driving it once every other month or so long enough to get the temp up, and then hard enough to burn off any moisture in the exhaust system or any buildup of gunk in the head/cylinders.

Just kidding - I can tell. Both.
OP, rip out your driveway apron and pour a new one correctly sloped so your car can come and go without scraping.
You can also address this issue with suspension changes. Not all airbag / hydraulic suspensions go into ridiculous low-riders...

Insurance cost is another factor to consider. If you start getting too many vehicles to the point that one or more are rarely used. It gets hard to justify the extra cost for insurance. I would think most people would keep full coverage on their Porsche, even if its mostly garaged. This was one of the reasons I sold mine. @2000 miles per year with full coverage insurance just doesn't make financial sense for most people. I couldn't find a policy that discounted for that kind of use.

if you have many policies insured with allstate, they are very kind when it comes to auto insurance - we have several rental properties, personal umbrella, a boat and 5 cars.
my allstate policy allows me to keep my porsche in suspension with full coverage at measly $15/month cost - if i want to use the car, i just send an email and they bill me for each week of use which is usually $20 per week.

I think mine drops down to $30 a month or something when I'm not using it - although it would be a bit more per week. This is regular coverage for a mid 30's driver who lives in a not so great part of town.
But yeah, it's pretty easy to get it in and out of the storage cost.
