Default Topgear clip 996 v NSX v Nissan GTR V Corvette

Hi All

Thought id share this clip I found, shows Tiff demonstrating the handling of the 996, if you are getting understeer in the bends, take a look at Tiffs different approaches to the handling!

996 looks great on track and beats the others!!

Just start it at 9:05...pretty much says it all! It's amazing, he just calls it a 911! No mention of 996, IMSB, oil or anything else...

To be fair that was made before we knew that the IMSB existed and was waiting to trash your motor because you didn't drive it enough/drove it too much/used the wrong oil/didn't rebuild the motor often enough/rebuilt the motor too often...

I like this though! 911 is the best and the cheapest. (I'm not even counting the Vette!)

He even said it has the most stylish interior......despite those that think the interior is too plasticy or whatever.

This again shows how classic the 911 design is compared to the other cars. Competition looks very dated but the 996 is still a good looking car today.

Fair enough...He didn't mention the headlights either... I guess it was before we realized they looked like "fried eggs"? BTW, I've never seen a fried egg that looks anything like a 996/Boxter/GT1 headlight assembly...

thanks for posting! enjoyed the time machine. the 996 was clearly ahead of its time in styling and it is looking better every year it ages, including the headlights! now that is great design. it is currently living in the shadows of a the old school love affair which is fine. great car.

Hmmm...I guess these were all competitors when new...I wonder what the resale value of each are now...?

I tried to look at current prices; highest priced 1999 NA 911 on cars.com is $30,000. 1997 NSX is $49,500. GTR not available in US. Corvette $29,995.

OK, just had a look in the UK....Nissan is maybe £5k, the NSX around £40k and the 996 maybe £14k. I couldn't find a Corvette of the right vintage...

It may not be popular round here, but I always liked the NSX...I guess price reflects it's relative rarity compared to the Porsche...

I had a co-worker that had the NSX about that time. I always liked the look of it, but sitting inside (without it moving) it really felt like a Honda to me. It was an impressive ride though, but as mid-engine cars go I think the 986 handled better. There just seemed to be something off about the weight balance in the NSX that made it less nimble that it seems like it should have been.

15 years in and I still think we made the right choice. Could have had more power, flash, performance, or comfort, but the 996 has proven to be a good mix of all of that.

And the better buy at that. This is funny for those that haven't seen it yet.
