"Faster" than a 996
So took the car out for errands and a secret beer run (wife was home cleaning). Lately I've noticed that, while I'm driving at a normal speed, other drivers would zoom past me in some misguided attempt to affirm that they are faster (superior?) to the 996. For instance, I passed a Ford Probe, full size pickup, and a Prius today at normal speeds only to have them sharply accelerate past me to reassert their dominance. Anyone else experience this phenomenon? I'm well past my engine revving, quick off the line days so in no way do I instigate any of this. So what other cars are "faster" than your 996?

Nobody seems to want to race me in "Hans", in 996 people were more playful. Two reasons for this I suspect. Those not in the know, see a black benz and pay no attention to quad pipes and V8 KOMPRESSOR badges. Those in the know, see the quad pipes and V8 KOMPRESSOR badges and don't bother trying.
The sleeper status of "Hans" is phenomenal. Regular people don't suspect that this is a high 11 second car in stock form.

Those in the know most likely assume an old guy is driving it and then when they see you, assume it's your dad's vehicle so they don't think you'll race them in fear of getting grounded.

Sadly not a "Porsche" story, but similar behavior.
Many moons ago I had a Toyota Supra Turbo. In red, with the big spoiler on the back.
I was stopped at a red light one day with the targa top off and this "kid" in a Mustang rolled up next to me. He revved and when the light turned green he gunned it. I just ignored him and drove along.
At the next light, sure enough there he was again and I rolled up along side. He starts revving again and I just rolled my eyes. The light turned green and he guns it again...as does the car on my OTHER side...and absolutely dusts the Mustang.
The car? A Volvo Turbo wagon. I caught the kid a couple of blocks later and just smiled and waved. :-)

I get this in my Corvette, and I got it in the 986. I think the 996 aero with tinted windows and Fisters (previously Tubi's) must be more intimidating - in nearly 3 years, not a single "wanna roll?"
I don't even get ricer fly-by's in the 996.
This is kind of funny, because of the two cars, the Corvette is the "sleeper" - from a dig or a roll, it will beat most stuff up to 400HP up past 100, while the 996 is pretty much bone-stock mechanically.

I get that a lot out here in LA. Cars have plenty of room to merge in behind me but they always push harder to get ahead of me and cut me off. When at a stoplight lineup, no one challenges me. Once we take off i guess they see me accelerate lazily and they always gas it to get ahead. Its some kind of automatic perception. I find myself doing the same thing to trucks, but that is because I can't see around them and would rather they be behind me. Just par for the course I guess.

I had a kid in a Honda Civic want to race me at a red light. I played along with him and he few off when the light changed, I slowly accelerated away. The road had a curve to it and as I rounded the curve 10 seconds after the Civic, I saw him being pulled over by a cop.
As I passed him I looked over, smiled and waved. You could almost see the steam coming out of his ears.
I noticed I drive slower in my Porsche's than in other cars. I guess because I can, I don't have to.
Besides I can always take it to the track and go ***** to the wall
